LAS VEGAS, Nev. — The Cal State Monterey Bay softball team ran its winning streak to five games by sweeping a pair of regional rivals on day one of the MSUB Desert Stinger Classic at Majestic Park. CSUMB opened the day with a 6–3 win over regional contender Grand Canyon University before roaring to a 15–0 win against regional newcomer Simon Fraser University.
“GCU is a solid team, so that was an important win for us,” said CSUMB Head Coach
Andrea Kenney. “It was nice to see our young players step up. All and all it was a great team effort today.”
Several Otters had big days offensively, led by freshmen
Cori Reinhardt (Riverside Poly HS) and
Nina Villanueva (San Diego/Mt. Carmel HS) who hit back–to–back home runs in a four–run first inning that carried CSUMB past Grand Canyon in the opener.
Angelina Orzoco (Clovis East HS) had three hits and
Jamie Moon (Torrance HS) chipped in four RBIs in the five inning win over Simon Fraser.
The Otter offense continued to run at a high level, banging out 18 hits on the day. With a four–run first versus Grand Canyon and an eight–run second versus Simon Fraser, CSUMB has had at least one four–plus run inning in six of its first seven games.
In the circle, senior
Caitlin Wallace (Beaverton, Ore./Southridge HS) allowed just one hit over four shutout innings against Simon Fraser to earn her second win of the season. Reinhardt, meanwhile, improved to 3–0 by going the distance against Grand Canyon.

Jackie Serna (Corona HS) who had two doubles and three RBIs against Grand Canyon and
Nikki Rodriguez (San Jose/Evergreen Valley HS) who went 2–for–3 with three runs and two RBIs versus Simon Fraser.
