Promising Season Ends At NCAA West Regional

CSUMB falls to San Marcos, CSUDH to conclude season

POSTGAME INTERVIEW  |  GAME NOTES

SAN MARCOS, Calif. —
The Cal State Monterey Bay softball team saw it's return to postseason play come to an end Friday when the Otters fell twice at the NCAA West Regional on the Cal State San Marcos Softball Field.

CSUMB lost to No. 1 seed Cal State San Marcos, 14–4, in Friday's early game before Dominguez Hills avenged Thursday's Otter victory with a 5–2 win to close the day. CSUMB's season ends at 33–24 overall. San Marcos and CSUDH will play for the regional title Saturday.

Things started well for the Otters when Nani Arreola (Oaks Christian HS) hit a laser to left field for her fifth home run of the season to stake the upset-minded Otters to a 2–0 lead in the first against San Marcos. But the Cougars exploded for eight runs in the home half of the inning to regain control.

Senior second baseman Gracie Strycula (San Dimas HS) hit her first collegiate home run in the second inning to get the Otters back to within 8–4. Sophomore Mikaya Griego (Diamond Bar HS) settled the storm to keep the Otters in the game, but San Marcos put a five spot on the board in the fourth inning to put the game on ice.

In the finale, Dominguez Hills took advantage of three Otters in the first three innings to score all five of its runs. Freshman Jordan Knutson (Medford, Ore./South Medford HS) allowed just one hit over the final three innings, but the damage had been done.

The Otters got one run back on Katarina Manuofetoa's (Marina HS/MPC) first collegiate homer. An Andrea DeJesus (Live Oak HS/West Valley College) sac fly cashed in Aniya Lawson's (Fairfield/Vanden HS) fourth inning triple to get CSUMB within three, but that's as close as it would get.

THE SAN MARCOS GAME WAS OVER WHEN… San Marcos thwarted CSUMB's comeback attempt with a 5-run fourth inning to put the game on ice.

THE DOMINGUEZ HILLS GAME WAS OVER WHEN… Ellie Escalante was caught off first base following Aniya Lawson's sixth-inning line out to left for an inning-ending double play that killed the final CSUMB rally.

WELCOME TO THE CLUB: Katarina Manuofetoa and Gracie Strycula joined the collegiate home run club when they each hit their first collegiate bombs Friday. They became the sixth and seventh Otters to hit their first over-the-fence collegiate home runs during the 2026 season.

OTTERS SURPASS 50 HOME RUNS: With three home runs Friday — by Nani Arreola, Gracie Strycula and Katarina Manuofetoa — the Otters finished 2026 with 51 home runs, surpassing the 50-homer mark for just the second time in program history. The 2012 squad was the first to do it, hitting a school-record 57 homers.

ALL GOOD THINGS MUST END: Dominguez Hills got Abreanna Alba out the only time they pitched to her Friday (she drew a pair of walks, one of them intentional) to end her hitting streak at 14 games. It was the ninth-longest hitting streak in Otter history.

ALMOST ALL GOOD THINGS MUST END: By scoring runs in both games Friday, the Otters ended the year by scoring runs in all 57 games they played during the 2026 season. It's the first time in program history the Otters acomplished that feat. CSUMB is the only team in the CCAA and in the entire West Region that can make that claim in 2026.

MOST PROLIFIC OFFENSE IN OTTER HISTORY: CSUMB finished the 2026 campaign by averaging 6.3 runs per game, making it the most prolific offense in program history, surpassing the 6.2 runs per game scored by the 2012 team. The 2026 offense finished with 361, 12 runs fewer than in 2012, but it did it in three fewer games.

EXTRA-BASE HITS vs. SAN MARCOS: DOUBLES: Ellie Escalante (10); TRIPLES: None; HOME RUNS: Nani Arreola (5), Gracie Strycula (1).

EXTRA-BASE HITS vs. DOMINGUEZ HILLS: DOUBLES: Leah Madden (2); TRIPLES: Aniya Lawson (3); HOME RUNS: Katarina Manuofetoa (1).

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… Friday's games wrapped up the 2026 Otter softball season.
