Otters Head South As CCAA Action Begins In Earnest

It will be CCAA action from here until the end of the regular season for the Otters, who begin a string of 19 consecutive conference games Friday at Cal State Dominguez Hills.

CSUMB begins run of 19 consecutive conference games Friday at Dominguez Hills

SEASIDE, Calif. -- The meat of the 2012-13 schedule for the Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball team begins Friday when the Otters head to Carson to tackle Cal State Dominguez Hills in the first of 19 consecutive California Collegiate Athletic Association games leading to the CCAA Championship Tournament.

CSUMB, the 2012 CCAA Tournament Champion, was picked to win the 2013 regular season title in a preseason poll of the conference coaches. The Otters (RV) are one of two CCAA teams mentioned in the lastest ESPN/USA Today national top 25 poll. Chico State is ranked No. 14).

The Otter will conclude their brief two-game trip Saturday (Jan. 5) at Cal State L.A. before returning to The Kelp Bed for their conference home opener against Cal Poly Pomona on Jan. 11.

SCOUTING THE TOROS: It's been feast or famine for the Toros under highly–regarded Head Coach Holly Goodenbour in her debutante season on the Carson campus. They earned a blowout win over Fresno Pacific (81–53) on Nov. 24 and upset Cal State L.A. 80–77 in their final game before the break. On the flip side, their six losses have come by an average margin of 21 points. Lee Monay leads the team in scoring at 12.8 points per game, although Julia Poecksteiner, who came aboard Dec. 5, has averaged 13.0 ppg in her two appearances. Jamie Robinson leads the board crew at 8.9 rpg.

WHEN LAST WE MET: Despite leading by as many as 17 points in the second half, the Otters had to withstand a late Toro rally to win 60–55 in the Torodome on Jan. 27, 2012. Dominguez had the ball with a chance to tie in the final minute, but the Otter defense held. Brandi Stephens led all scorers with 14 points for CSUMB. Porcha Davis, Lyndsey Heard and Sherrie Hughes each scored 10 for CSUDH.

WHEN LAST WE PLAYED: The Otters overcame slow shooting starts in both halves with a stifling defensive effort that led to a 51–38 win at Cal State East Bay on Dec. 8. No Otter reached double figures as Stefanie Corgel (Manhattan Beach/UCSB) and Nikki Beckman (Dublin/Ohlone College) led CSUMB with eight points apiece.

HOME SWEET HOME, PART I: The Otters have enjoyed quite The Kelp Bed advantage under Renee Jimenez, posting a 37–17 (.685) home record in her four seasons at the helm. Over the past two seasons, CSUMB is an even more impressive 25–5 (.833) within the friendly confines.

HOME SWEET HOME, PART II: The Otters have been particularly dangerous at home in nonconference tilts during the Jimenez era, posting a 10–1 record in such contests. The lone loss, you ask? A 68–63 defeat by Simon Fraser University on Nov. 26, 2011.

MUNSCH–ING ON THE URBAN KNIGHTS: Senior forward Gabby Munsch (Lodi/Cal State San Marcos) hit 10–of–14 from the field to match her career high with 21 points in CSUMB's Dec. 5 win over Academy of Art. It was CSUMB's first 20–point game of the season and its first since Stefanie Corgel (Manhattan Beach/UCSB) dropped 20 on Cal State L.A. on Dec. 18, 2011.

SHOOTING THE LIGHTS OUT: Thanks in large part to Gabby Munsch's hot night the Otters shot a sizzling 59.3 percent (32-of-54) from the field against Academy of Art. It was the third–best shooting night in CSUMB history.

ICE, ICE BABY: The Otters have been ice cold shooting from long range in their last two road contests. CSUMB was 2–for–20 in their Dec. 1 game at San Francisco State and 3–for–20 in their Dec. 8 game at Cal State East Bay. That's a combined 12.5 percent. The Otters are shooting 39.5 percent (34–for–86)from beyond the arc in their other four games this season.

ANOTHER 20–WIN SEASON, ANOTHER TITLE: The Otters secured a second consecutive 20–win season and a second consecutive championship banner with last season's run through the CCAA Tournament. They are the first two of each in CSUMB women's basketball history.

70 IS THE ANSWER TO EVERYTHING: With apologies to Douglas Adams, the answer to everything isn't 42, it's 70. The Otters have won 25 consecutive games when scoring at least 70 points, a streak they continued with their 79–63 win over Academy of Art. In fact, CSUMB is 26-1 all–time when scoring 70 or more points under Renee Jimenez. The lone loss, you ask? An 85–79 loss to Cal State Stanislaus on Dec. 6, 2008.

WHY PLAY 40 MINUTES? Second halves have become all but irrelevant when the Otters lead at intermission under Renee Jimenez. CSUMB has won 59 of its last 60 regular season games in which it has led at halftime. In fact, under Jimenez, the Otters have a 65–3 all–time regular season record when leading at intermission. Humboldt State broke the Otters' 52–game win streak in such situations by overcoming a 32-31 on deficit Feb. 4, 2012 to win 65–51. CSUMB was 18–1 when leading at halftime last season.

SHE STEALS SIX STEALS BY THE SEASHORE: Jessica Fontenette and Nikki Beckman (Dublin/Ohlone College) each collected six steals in consecutive games versus Notre Dame de Namur and Shepherd University respectively. Those marks tie for No. 3 in the Otter single–game record book.

A THIEF IN THE NIGHT: Jessica Fontenette is closing in on the CSUMB career steals record of 133 held by Dana Andrews (2006–09). Fontenette enters the Dominguez Hills game with 128 steals, good for the No. 2 spot on the CSUMB list. Holly Holcomb currently ranks No. 8 on the list with 79.

THAT GIRL GIVES A HAND: Jessica Fontenette matched her personal best with seven assists in the win over Academy of Art. That mark ties for the No. 8 spot in the CSUMB record book. Fontenette now has 153 career assists and is tied with Dana Andrews for No. 4 on that list. Alma Lopez set the CSUMB standard with 206 assists from 2007–08.

THE DEFENSE NEVER RESTS: Otter success in the Renee Jimenez era begins with defense. The 2011–12 Otters allowed just 59.6 points per game, marking the third consecutive season they allowed fewer than 60.0 points per game.

BALANCING ACT: While defense remains the forté, the Otter offense found success by doing an insane balancing act once again in 2011–12. CSUMB's top six scorers averaged between 9.8 and 7.6 points per game, marking the second consecutive season that an Otter championship team did not feature a player who averaged in double figures.

WORKING OVERTIME: Four seasons, four overtime games, four wins. That's the formula for CSUMB and bonus basketball during the Renee Jimenez era. The Otters have played (and won) exactly one overtime game each season under Jimenez. Last season, the Otters came from behind late in regulation then finished off Sonoma State 64–59 in The Kelp Bed on Dec. 3, 2011.

OTTERS WEARING RED? While not traditionally a CSUMB color, red will be the color for four Otters who will redshirt the 2012–13 season: One of the redshirts will be a returning player: Sophomore forward Mykayla Harris. She will be joined on the redshirt list by junior wing Kayla Patton and freshman guards Victoria Dorn and Tyvette White.
