SEASIDE, Calif. - The Cal State Monterey Bay women's water polo team came out on top Friday morning against conference opponent, Cal State San Bernardino with a 10-4 decision. The Otters are 3-0 against the Coyotes this season.
The Otters improve to 15-17 overall and 3-5 in Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) action.
Senior #Nikki Smart# and sophomore #Jackie Walters# each recorded hat tricks in the game. Smart tallied her 100th goal of the season in the final quarter.
In the opening minutes, senior #Chloe McRae# scored to put CSUMB up 1-0. Sophomore #Julie Cooper# and Walters each scored for the Otters while CSUSB notched a goal to make it 3-1 at the end of the first quarter.
Junior #Meagan Bebb# and Smart each scored outside shots to push the lead to 5-1 at the half. Strong defense by CSUMB prevented the Coyotes from scoring in the second quarter.
The third quarter consisted of a single goal by each team with Walters notching her second of the game.
In the final quarter, the Otters made a 4-2 run to secure the win. Three different Otters scored in the final quarter. Scoring two of the four goals, Smart's 100th goal came on a blind shot over the shoulder. Junior #Sarah Chafi# had a fast break at the end of the quarter, dishing it cross-cage to Walters to get the last goal of the game and making the final score 10-4.
The Otters play their last home game of the season hosting UC Santa Cruz on Saturday, April 16 at 11 a.m.
