FRESNO, Calif. – The Cal State Monterey Bay women's water polo team split in its opening weekend of the 2010 season, falling to Azusa Pacific, 9-8, before rebounding with an 11-8 victory over host Fresno Pacific.
Junior #Chloe McRae# led the Otters with four goals while senior #Heather Penna# notched three goals. Senior #Sarah Ford# nabbed 15 saves in the two games in goal.
Against Azusa Pacific, the Otters jumped out to a 2-0 lead courtesy of goals by McRae and freshman #Christina Vournas#. The Cougars quickly came back and tied the game at 2-2, but CSUMB once again took the lead back on a goal by freshman #Ali Woollett# with 27 seconds remaining in the first period. APU tied the game with four seconds on the clock, 3-3.
The Cougars claimed their first lead of the game in the opening minute of the second period with a goal by Michelle Lutz.
Despite tying the game up two more times, the Otters were unable to reclaim the lead as APU had the upper hand the rest of the game.
The Fresno Pacific game was a different story as CSUMB jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the first period and never lost the advantage of the game. The Sunbirds closed the gap to 9-8 with six minutes left in the game but Penna and McRae each scored to clinch the victory.
CSUMB competes in the NorCal Tournament hosted by Cal this weekend in Berkeley. The Otters will face three Top 25 teams including No. 1 ranked Stanford.
