SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The Cal State Monterey Bay women's water polo team defeated Cal State East Bay, 13-11, in the first round of the Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) Championships.
CSUMB was led by sophomore #Nikki Smart# who recorded a career-high five goals.
The Otters took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on freshman #Katie Sowul#'s goal at the 7:09 mark. The Pioneers scored back-to-back goals to take a 2-1 lead, but Smart's goal at 3:34 once again tied the game. CSUEB held a 3-2 advantage after the first quarter.
The Pioneers opened the second quarter with two quick goals to extend their lead to 5-2. CSUMB rallied with three uncontested goal, two by sophomore #Alex Vespremi# and a single by Smart.
CSUEB outscored the Otters 4-3 in the third quarter.
After two more tied scores, sophomore #Chloe McRae# scored the game winning goal at the 1:25 minute-mark and Koorndyk added an insurance goal with 28 second remaining.
The Otters pair off against No.1 seeded Loyola Marymount University at 8 p.m.
