Otters play top seed UC Davis tough, but lose steam late

Water polo team threatens huge upset at WWPA Championships

LOS ANGELES, Calif. --- Cal State Monterey Bay played UC Davis, the top seed in the Western Water Polo Association Championships, to a tie midway through the third period before losing 11-6 Saturday in the WWPA Championship semifinal round.

The Aggies scored four straight goals in a span of four minutes to pull away late. Cal State Monterey tied the score at 4-4 with 4:26 to play in the  third when Stephanie Salvi put the ball in the net. UC Davis then scored two straight to go up 6-4 with :31 to play in the quarter.

The Otters looked to gain energy heading into the fourth as #Cookie Cuzynski# scored her second of two goals to make it 6-5 with just 10  seconds left. However, the Aggies delivered a dagger, scoring as time  expired on a goal from Mary Lowe.

UC Davis scored the next three to open the fourth quarter to pull  away. Goalie #Jenna Beer# made 15 saves in the match, 10 in the second half.

Cal State Monterey Bay (18-12) will play  at 1 p.m. against Cal State Bakersfield. UC Davis improves to 24-8 on the season and will play No. 5 seed Santa Clara at 4 p.m. Saturday.
