The Otters will face Colorado State in the first round on Friday.
SEASIDE — Cal State Monterey Bay will enter the Western Water Polo Association Championship on Friday as the No. 8 seed and will play No. 9 Colorado State in the first round of the tournament to be held at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles.
The Otters will play at 12:15 p.m. The Otters had an impressive 2008 season, finishing 17-11 overall and 5-8 against the WWPA. Colorado State went just 9-24 overall but 7-13 against the WWPA. UC Davis awaits the winner in the final game of the day at 5:15 p.m.
CSUMB defeated Colorado State 11-9 on April 6 at the UC Davis Aggies Shootout and the game was not as close as the score would indicate. The Otters led 10-5 after the third period and sat many starters, including senior goalie
Jenna Beer.
UC Davis, which finished the regular season 12-1 against WWPA foes, is the top seed and beat CSUMB 13-4 in third game of the season on Feb. 3. The Aggies finished winning 10 straight and enter the tournament 23-8 overall.
Defending champion Loyola Marymount is the No.2 seed. The Lions went 18-10 overall on the season and 8-3 in the WWPA. UC San Diego is the No. 3 seed and Cal State Bakersfield is the No. 4 seed. They each earn a bye into the WWPA quarterfinals.
The rest of the seeds are No. 10 UC Santa Cruz, No. 11 Cal State East Bay and No. 12 Chapman. The tournament will begin at 8:30 a.m. on Friday when Santa Clara takes on Chapman.
