CSUMB defeats Cal State East Bay; Loses to UC Davis

SEASIDE --- Cal State Monterey Bay's women's water polo team split their weekend matches, defeating Cal State East Bay 8-7 in their pool on Saturday, and then losing to nationally-ranked UC Davis 13-4 at home on Sunday.

With the split, the Otters' record is 2-1. CSUMB goal keeper Jenna Beer made 15 saves and two assists in Hayward. Chelsea Laning scored two goals while Cookie Cuzynski, Erin Lee, Erica Bergeson, Stephanie Salvi and Christy Thompson each scored one. CSUMB took 2-1 lead in the first quarter and was able to maintain it. The Otters led 4-3 at half and 7-6 after three quarters.

“It was a very competitive game throughout,” said CSUMB head coach Gary Figueroa. Despite the win, Figueroa said his team did not play as well as they did in Sunday's loss to UC Davis, which is a Divsion I school and ranked 10th in the nation. CSUMB trailed just 3-2 after the first quarter and 6-3 at halftime before giving up five goals in the third period and falling way behind.

“I was really encouraged with how we played today,” said Figueroa. “The game was played well on both sides --- with good intensity --- and it was fun to watch.”

Beer made 19 saves against UC Davis. Laning scored two goals, while Lee and Smart each scored one. Laura Uribe led the UC Davis attack with three goals.

“It was the first time we really competed with Davis,” said Cuzynksi, who had three steals in the match.
