Santa Clara sinks Otters water polo team 7-2

SEASIDE --- The Otters scored first but Santa Clara University scored the next seven on Sunday as the women's water polo team lost to the visiting Broncos 7-2 at the CSUMB Aquatics Center.

CSUMB (3-2) led 1-0 after the first period ; #Chelsea Laning# scored within the first minute and CSUMB's goal keeper #Jenna Beer# had made three great saves. But while the Otters had been able to make the timely steal or block early on, the Broncos eventually began converting some of their opportunities.

Beer made four more saves in the second and seven more in the third, but some shots still made it through and Santa Clara led 5-1 after three periods. The Broncos opened the fourth period with two quick goals. #Kellie Koorndyke# scored the Otters' second goal with  3:03 left in the game and Santa Clara stalled for the remainder of the game.

Beer finished with 18 saves. Claire Linney of Aptos scored three goals for Santa Clara. The Otters' next match will be at the Seawolf Splash Tournament, hosted by Sonoma State University in Rohnert Park. CSUMB will play Cal Lutheran at 12:30 p.m. on Feb. 23 and UC Santa Cruz at 5 p.m.
