SEASIDE --- It took #Chelsea Laning# 16 seconds to add to her NCAA career goals record on Saturday as Cal State Monterey Bay opened its 2008 women's water polo season with an easy 17-6 victory over visiting Cal Maritime.
Laning, an All-American who set the career goals mark at 382 last season, scored six in less than a half of play. Her first goal she flicked through with 7:44 left in the first quarter and the second one at 6:49. After #Erica Bergeson# put the Otters up 3-0 at the 5:36 mark, Laning scored again with 4:49 left in the first and the rout was on. The starting unit led 11-0 by halftime and spent the rest of the match cheering for their teammates.
“That was a very good start for our season,” said head coach #Gary Figueroa#. “We had the opportunity to play everybody --- and everybody contributed. That's always fun.”
Ten different Otters scored. #Nikki Smart# had three goals, while goal keeper #Jenna Beer# made four saves and a couple of long throws down the pool that turned into quick scores. Kristen Swader led Cal Maritime with three goals.
The Otters will busy next weekend as they travel to Hayward for a match on Saturday and then return home for a game against UC Davis. “We've always had close games with Cal State East Bay and I expect a tough match from them,” said Figueroa. “Davis is, if not the best team, one of the top teams in our conference. We should be able to compete with them. I wouldn't say we don't have a chance, but it will be very difficult for us.”
Sunday's home game will begin at 10:30 a.m.
