SAN FRANCISCO – The Cal State Monterey Bay track team saw two program records fall and also showcased eight CCAA Championship qualifying marks this weekend at the Johnny Mathis Invitational held at Cox Stadium.
"I am so very happy for the teams," CSUMB head coach Greg Rhines said. "They went out there today and did some serious damage. So many impressive personal bests today that I almost could not keep track. The Fanelli and Stanford meets are going to be great."
In the 5,000-meter run, senior Ali Keith led the women's side, finishing 11th in a new school record time of 17:26.58 to break her previous mark. Angel Arciniega paced the men's group with an 11th-place finish of his own, clocking in at 14:50.96. Five Otters hit qualifiers in the first 5k of the season for the squad.
The Otters showcased great success in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase, where they secured four of the top seven spots. Hannah Amundsen led the group with a second-place finish, clocking a PR time of 11:10.72. She was followed closely by Cozette Wood in third (11:22.05/PR) and Maya Centeno in fourth (11:36.78/PR), while Ava Wettlaufer added to the team total by finishing seventh in 12:11.09.
On the men's side, William Trowbridge covered the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a program record time of 9:45.78 to place sixth overall.
In the mid-distance events, Rachel Hoops and Kayla Young provided a productive scoring duo for the women's squad. In the 1,500-meter run, Hoops took fifth place in 4:43.60, followed by Young in sixth with a CCAA qualifying mark at 4:46.54. Hoops returned in the 800-meter run to claim another fifth-place finish (2:15.36), while Young added a point with another qualifying time at 2:20.77.
For the men, Erik Bromley emerged as a top performer, earning five points with a fourth-place finish in the 800-meter run (1:57.32) and leading the Otter men in the 1,500-meters with a time of 4:04.92.
Freshman Cadence Mitchell earned four points in the 400-meter dash, finishing sixth with a time of 1:04.58.
The Otters will return to the oval in Cox Stadium for the Mike Fanelli Classic. The two-day event will begin on Friday, April 3rd.
