SEASIDE, Calif. - Cheyanne Whitfield, a standout women's basketball player for Cal State Monterey Bay, is a shining example of dedication and drive both on and off the court. Her journey as a student-athlete is a testament to her commitment to excellence, leadership, and personal growth.
The senior has embraced the challenges and opportunities that come with being both a student and an athlete, and her story serves as an inspiration to her teammates and fellow students.
Thriving in a unique environment
-------------------------------
Whitfield's decision to join Cal State Monterey Bay was not just about basketball; it was about finding the perfect fit for her academic and personal goals.
"The main reason is I really like the area, the campus, weather, it's all very ideal for a California university, and I really enjoy it," she said. "The school shows so much love to the athletic programs, creating an environment that I love being around."
This environment has been instrumental in Whitfield's success. Last season, the Los Angeles native started 22 games, scored in double-figures 10 times and was named to the CCAA All-Academic Team.
The power of camaraderie
------------------------
For Whitfield, the best part of her collegiate playing experience has been the relationships she's built with teammates, coaches, and fellow students.
"Getting to build new relationships with other teams, teammates, and coaches, and being a big part of the university as a whole, has been the best part," Whitfield said. "Bringing exciting events to the students, whether they are from CSUMB or other colleges, is something I truly enjoy."
These connections have not only enriched her college experience but have also made her a better player and person.
The importance of routine and confidence
----------------------------------------
Whitfield's success on the court is not just a result of her natural talent but also her dedication to routine and consistency.
"I've been playing basketball for quite some time, so I have a good set of routines that help me get prepared for a game," she said. "Having a good routine can help you stay confident, which is one of the most important aspects of playing well."
This mindset has allowed her to perform at her best, game after game, and has been a key factor in her achievements.
Looking to the future
---------------------
As Whitfield continues her journey at Cal State Monterey Bay, she has her sights set on both individual and team goals.
"I hope to be a better person and teammate on and off the court," she said. "I think there's always room for improvement and ways to get better."
Whether it's winning a championship or achieving a record over .500, Whitfield is determined to make her mark and bring excitement to the women's basketball program.
Beyond her collegiate career, Whitfield has big ambitions. She dreams of earning a full scholarship for a master's degree or working alongside amazing people in the data analytics or information systems field.
With her dedication, leadership, and passion for growth, there's no doubt that Whitfield will continue to make a significant impact wherever her journey takes her.
The Otters will open the 2026 calendar portion of their season with four straight contests on the road. CSUMB starts the New Year with a Jan. 2 game at Stanislaus State.Â
