OTTER SPOTLIGHT: Kaya Eaton

October 01, 2025

SEASIDE, Calif. — As Kaya Eaton reflects on her journey as a senior athlete at Cal Monterey Bay, she fondly remembers the reasons that brought her to the vibrant university. The proximity to the beach was a huge factor in her decision, as she grew up near the ocean and couldn't imagine her college experience without it.

Beyond that, it was the team culture of the water polo team that truly drew Eaton in. The welcoming and supportive nature of her teammates played a significant role in her choice to join the Otters.

"I knew I wanted to be on a team that was supportive of everyone, determined to succeed, and ultimately had a lot of fun," she said.

One of the things Eaton cherishes most about her collegiate playing experience is the relationships she has built with her teammates. Being part of something bigger than herself and working hard in the pool and the gym every day is incredibly fulfilling for her. She vividly recalls the moment when her team made history by securing second place at the conference tournament during her freshman year — the highest placement for a water polo team at CSUMB.

As Eaton enters her senior year, she has set personal and team goals for herself. Individually, she hopes to graduate in the spring and contribute as much as she can to her team's success in the water.

Her aim is to have her best performance of her four years and reach a shot percentage of .450. However, the ultimate goal for her and her team is to win the WWPA conference tournament.

"I believe that my team is extremely capable of this, and it would be the perfect way to close out my time as a student-athlete," she said.

Beyond the competition, Eaton also emphasizes the importance of team culture. She hopes to create an environment where all teammates feel respected, supported, and connected. She believes that this sense of unity will contribute immensely to their success in the water.

Looking ahead, Eaton has a big goal for after she graduates from CSUMB. She aspires to become a kindergarten teacher and leave a lasting impact on her students and the community as a whole.

Eaton's journey at CSUMB has been a testament to the power of team culture, hard work, and the pursuit of personal and team goals. As she approaches the end of her time as a student-athlete, she remains focused on leaving a legacy both in and out of the water.
