SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay used fast starts on both ends of the pool to race past visiting Santa Clara, 12–7, in the Otters' home opener Saturday at the Otter Tank.

The win was CSUMB's fourth all-time against Santa Clara and 21st all-time against NCAA Division I competition.

Freshman Olivia Gutierrez (San Diego/Bonita Vista HS) stole the show on offense, recording her first collegiate hat trick with four goals on six shots. Alex Harris (Davis Senior HS), Nalani Galindo (Poway HS/Miramar College) and Katie Rudis (Oceanside/El Camino HS) each scored two goals. WWPA Player of the Week Stella Martin (Clovis West HS) chipped in three assists.

Galindo scored a pair of early markers to help the Otters jump in front 5–0 midway through the second quarter. Gutierrez scored twice and Rudis scored once late in the half to make it 8–1 at intermission.

With the Otter offense doing its part, the defense stepped up even more. Sophomore Marissa White (Union City/Mission San Jose HS) was outstanding in goal once again, registering 14 saves for the second time in five outings this season. Although she made several spectacular stops, the field defense did a good job making the Broncos shoot from the perimeter for much of the afternoon.

"Our goal was to go out strong in the first quarter and then play every quarter like it was our first," said CSUMB Head Coach Emily Schmit. "We used our depth to our advantage to keep pushing the whole game."

The Otters return to the pool Sunday for their annual alumni match in the Otter Tank. They'll resume regular season competition next Saturday (Jan. 31) when San Jose State visits for a 1 p.m. first sprint.
