Eaton, Sosa Record Hat Tricks at Fullerton

Otters suffer two tough losses on Day 2 of Fullerton Invite

FULLERTON, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay suffered a pair of tough losses on Day 2 of the Fullerton Invitational, falling to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 10–9, and host Cal State Fullerton, 11–9, Saturday at the Titan Aquatics Center.

Senior Kaya Eaton (San Diego/Helix Charter HS) led the offense with five goals, including the second 4-goal game of her career against Division I Fullerton. Emma Sosa (Tustin/Foothill HS) matched Eaton's five goals on the day, including a hat trick against the Titans.

CSUMB raced to an early 5–2 lead against CMS and still lead 6–4 late in the first half. But the Athenas used a goal late in the half to spark a 4–0 run that gave them a 9–6 advantage early in the fourth quarter.

Consecutive goals by Shea Tully (Yucaipa HS) and Ximena Pichon (Clovis HS) got the Otters to within one midway through the final period before Caitlin Muñoz converted a penalty to extend the Athena lead back to 10–8.

Freshman center Riley Becker (Simi Valley/Oaks Christian HS) responded with a goal on the ensuing CSUMB, possession, but that was as close as the Otters would get.

As they did in the morning game, the Otters jumped to 4–2 and 7–3 leads against host Fullerton in their tournament finale. But the Titans reeled off five unanswered goals over a 4-minute stretch of the third quarter to take an 8–7 lead.

Eaton scored her third of the game to tie the score late in the third and Sosa netted her fourth to tie the score again at 9–9 early in the final period. Again, however, the hosts responded with two late scores to pull out the narrow win.

White led the Otter defense with 21 saves Saturday, raising her career total to 296. She needs four saves to become the eighth goalkeeper in Otter history to reach 300 career saves.

The Otters return to action and to the Otter Tank to open their home schedule Saturday (Jan. 24) against their third NCAA Division I opponent of the season when Santa Clara University visits. First sprint is scheduled for 1 p.m.
