Otters Offer Historic Performances At NCAA Regional

Best finish ever for women, second best for men

November 07, 2023

MONMOUTH, Ore. — The Cal State Monterey Bay cross country teams gave historic performances at the 2023 NCAA Regional Championship Meet Saturday on Western Oregon's Ash Creek Preserve Course. Led by record book worthy performances from Jaime Gonzalez (Camarillo HS) and Connor Farrow (Modesto/Beyer HS) on the men's side and freshman Daniela Munguia (Clovis North HS) and Lisa Irvine (Roseville/Woodcreek HS) on the women's side, the Otters put forth two of the top finishes in program history.

Gonzalez (32:00.40) and Farrow (32:04.80) ran the sixth and seventh fastest 10K times in Otter history to lead CSUMB to a 13th place finish of 23 teams in the men's race. It was CSUMB's second best at the NCAA level and its best since finishing 12th in 2014.

The times were PRs for both runners as well. Sophomore Alex Fernandes (San Ramon/Doughtery Valley HS) also PRed while placing in the top half of the 162-runner field.

Munguia and Irvine, meanwhile, led the Otter women to their best ever finish in an NCAA Regional as CSUMB placed 15th amongst 24 teams. At 22:37.10 (64th place) and 22:39.70 (65th), they ran the fifth and sixth fast regional times in program history. Only all-time great Hannah Bell (2015) ever ran faster as an Otter on the Ash Creek Preserve Course.

Angelee Berganio (Santa Clarita/Canyon HS) also PRed in 23:02.80 and finished in the top half of the 167-runner field.

"It has been a fantastic season. The 'usual suspects' did their usual, very well!" said CSUMB Head Coach Greg Rhines. "Additionally, many new faces gave impressive results throughout the fall, especially at the end of the season. I am very proud of these young women and men. They are helping us climb up the NCAA Regional rankings each and every year!"

The NCAA Regional Championship marked the conclusion of the 2023 Otter cross country seasons.
