Otter Women Shine In Best CCAA Finish Ever

Women finish fifth; men earn best finish since 2016

October 21, 2023

FREMONT, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay women's cross country team took center stage at the 2023 California Collegiate Athletic Association Championship Meet by earning their best finish ever Saturday morning at the Quarry Lakes Course in Fremont.

CSUMB finished fifth of 11 teams, its best finish in 18 seasons of competing at the NCAA Division II level and its best since second as an NAIA member at the Cal-Pac Championship in 2003. The previous Otter best was seventh in 2015 and 2021.

The Otter men finished in seventh place, matching their best finish since 2016.

"These student-athletes always find ways to make me say 'wow!' and today was no exception," said CSUMB Head Coach Greg Rhines. "The MB women ran so well. They were fighters in the race, they kept their positions or grabbed places, they helped each other and they ran very smart. The men went for it from the start of the race, they didn't back down from any team and strong results came out of it in the end."

Six Otter women posted season best times Saturday, led by junior Lisa Irvine (Roseville/Woodcreek HS), who finished 26th overall in a season–best 22:35.4. Freshman Daniela Munguia (Clovis North HS) finished one spot behind Irvine in 29th with a 22:46.6.

The rest of the Otter scorers all ran their fastest races of the season. Mackenzie Caprino (Salem, Ore./South Salem HS) led that group by placing 35th. Freshmen Cozette Wood (Kailua-Kona, Hawaii/Kealakehe HS) and Cassidy Andreadakis (Orcutt Academy) also earned spots in the top half of the 91–runner field by finishing 42nd and 43rd respectively.

In the men's race, junior Jaime Gonzalez (Camarillo HS) assumed his customary spot atop the Otter leaderboard, placing 27th overall in 26:05.0. Senior Connor Farrow (Modesto/Beyer HS) also finished in the top half of the field when his time of 26:25.5 earned him 37th place.

Freshman Jake Walton (Livermore/Granada HS) just missed his 8K PR by 1.3 seconds when he placed 44th in 26:42.6. Fellow freshman Cameron Cornforth (Kailua-Kona, Hawaii/Kealakehe HS) was the lone Otter male to claim a season or personal record, finishing 52nd in 26:53.8.

The Otters will take next week off before heading to Monmouth, Ore. for the 2023 NCAA Division II West Regional Championship Meet at Ash Creek Preserve Nov. 4.
