SAN FRANCISCO — The Cal State Monterey Bay cross country teams closed the regular season portion of their 2023 schedules at an unusually hot Speedway Meadows Course for the S.F. State Invitational Oct. 6 in Golden Gate Park.

Temperatures that normal average in the low 70s soared into the high 80s, making for challenging conditions. Times were up across the board for the 330 total competitors, although Otter freshmen Jake Walton (Livermore/Granada HS) and Cameron Cornforth (Kailua-Kona, Hawaii/Kealakehe HS) both managed 8K PRs to highlight the CSUMB performances.

In the men's race Connor Farrow (Modesto/Beyer HS) became the first Otter to best Jaime Gonzalez (Camarillo HS) in a race this season by finishing 25th in 25:59.0. Gonzalez placed 38th in 26:21.4. Walton (51st), Alex Fernandes (54th), Cornforth (68th) and Alexis Lorenzana (70th) all placed in the top half of the 182-runner field.

In the women's race, freshman Daniela Munguia (Clovis North HS) continued to come on strong, posting CSUMB's top finish by placing 50th in 24:01.8. Fellow freshman Cozette Wood (Kailua-Kona, Hawaii/Kealakehe HS) finished just behind in 56th. Cassidy Andreadakis (Orcutt Academy) and Lisa Irvine (Roseville/Woodcreek HS) also finished in the top half of the field, placing 64th and 67th respectively.

"The heat was brutal on Friday," said CSUMB Head Coach Greg Rhines. "I am so impressed that my student-athletes not only got through their races, there were strong performances as well. We will be ready for the CCAA Championship next week."

The Otters will take the week off to train before heading to the East Bay area for the CCAA Championship Meet Oct. 21 in Fremont.
