Otters Cap Historic CCAA Championship Meet With Best Finish Ever

Nia Howard, Brooke Roy repeat as All–CCAA performers

May 10, 2022

SAN FRANCISCO — The Cal State Monterey Bay track and field team capped its 2022 campaign with its best finish ever at the CCAA Championship Meet Saturday at Cox Stadium on the campus of San Francisco State.

The Otters scored a school record 32 points to earn a ninth place finish. Thrower Nia Howard (San Gregornio HS) and steeplechaser Brooke Roy (Camus [Wash.] HS) joined Hannah Bell as the only Otters to repeat as All–CCAA performers by duplicating their efforts from the 2019 meet (the most record CCAA Championship due to COVID).

Roy became the first Otter to finish second in an event at the CCAA Championship with an 11:16.85 in the steeplechase. It marked the fastest steeple by an Otter this season and the fourth fastest in school history.

Howard placed third in the javelin for the second consecutive season with a throw of 126–8, the second best throw in Otter history.

Freshmen Mina Tsai (San Jose/Santa Teresa HS) and Taylar Yost (Raleigh, N.C./Wakefield HS) became the first athletes in Otter history to score in multiple events at the CCAA Championship. Tsai finished fifth in the long jump with a leap of 15–9 while Yost placed sixth in the 400 hurdles in a school and personal record 1:07.00. The duo also ran the leadoff (Tsai) and third (Yost) legs of the Otter record–setting 4x400 meter relay team that went 4:04.07 and finished in seventh place.

Other scorers for the Otters included Alexis White (San Gregornio HS), who set the CSUMB record in the 100 with a 12.13 to place fifth in the event. Mackenzie Caprino (South Salem [Ore.] HS) set a PR in the steeple with an 11:21.24 to place fourth while Lisa Irvine (Roseville/Woodcreek HS) placed fifth at 11:32.18 to close the Otter scoring.

"I am so proud of this team!" says CSUMB Head Coach Greg Rhines. "We scored 32 points while competing in only 11 events. It's been our best year so far since we began the program in 2015. I will miss my soon to be graduates more than I can express. They Truly are wonderful and have helped us forge a great culture around MB Track & Field!"

In addition to the scorers, several other Otters posted significant marks at the CCAA Championship. Yost ran a PR of 16.03 in the 100 hurdles. Hannah Marin (Paraclete HS) ran the third fastest 10,000 in Otter history with a PR of 39:16.00. Tsai added the fourth–fastest Otter 200 ever with a 26.32.
