Tong Leads Otters To Fourth Place Finish At CCAA Championship

Freshman Cathy Tong places sixth, one of three Otters in the Top 15

April 13, 2022

BROOKS, Calif. — Freshman Cathy Tong (Newport Harbor HS) tied for sixth place overall to lead the Cal State Monterey Bay women's golf team to a fourth place finish at the CCAA Championship Tournament Wednesday at the Yocha Dehe Golf Club.

Tong followed her second round 74 with a 76 Wednesday to complete the 54–hole event at 231 (+15). She finished 10 strokes behind individual champion Morgan Sjoerdsma or Cal State L.A.

Three other Otters earned Top 15 finishes, led by sophomore Zoe Offield (Stockton/Tokay HS), who placed 11th at 234. Junior Kayla Choy (San Francisco/Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep) claimed a share of 13th place at 235 while sophomore Isabel Carpenter (San Luis Obispo HS) finished 15th at 237.

Cal State San Marcos, ranked No. 6 in the latest GolfStat NCAA Division II rankings, won the team trophy at 909. Cal State L.A. (927), Cal State East Bay (932) and CSUMB (937) rounded out the Top 4.

"We were all disappointed with our finish today. We had a great start lost it, got it back, but then let the round get away from us coming down the stretch," said CSUMB Head Coach Jim Ragan. "The team is gaining valuable experience with every tournament this spring. We are all looking forward to competing in our next event. Likewise, Cathy had a great tournament and let it get away from her the last couple of holes. We are in a great position moving into post season."

Next up for the Otters is an expected bid to the NCAA Regional Championship May 2–4 in Stockton. Official NCAA selections will be announced on Apr. 25.
