AMARILLO, Texas — Cal State Monterey Bay put together a strong opening day at the West Texas Fall Invitational, finishing 36 holes atop the team leaderboard Monday at the Toscana Golf Club. The Otters finished the day at 2-over par, two shots clear of second-place UT Dallas (+4).
"Overall, a solid opening day to start the season," CSUMB head coach
Jim Ragan said. "Khivi stepped up, shooting 67 in the first round that tied the all-time low round for the Otter women's program. Morgan and Mia followed up with a pair of 68s in the second round, which really helped the team.
CSUMB opened with a 2-over first round before firing an even-par second to move into sole possession of first place. Cal State LA (+8) sits six shots back in third, while host West Texas A&M (+9) is fourth.
The Otters placed two golfers inside the top four individually, led by
Khivi Kaur, who finished the opening 36 holes in third place at 4-under par. Kaur opened the tournament unblemished with a 4-under 67 before firing an even-par round.
The 67 equaled CSUMB's single-round record, joining Tilda Kvarnrud (2
nd RD Ladies National 2024) and
Cathy Tong (2
nd RD NCAA West Regional 2024).
Morgan Pittman sits right behind her in fourth at 2-under. After opening with a 1-over round, Pittman surged up the leaderboard with a career-low 68.
"Hopefully we can avoid the rain tomorrow and get in all three scheduled rounds," Ragan added. "I know Khivi and Morgan would like to have the opportunity to play for an individual win."
Mia Golovich also provided a big second-round performance for the Otters. Golovich bounced back from a 5-over opening round by carding a 3-under second round, moving into a tie for ninth at 2-over overall.
Audrey Cheng rounds out the CSUMB lineup inside the top 25, sitting tied for 21st at 6-over. Cheng opened with an even-par round before posting a 6-over second round.
The Otters are slated to start the final round at 10:30 a.m. CT.
