Cal State Monterey Bay women’s golf found it’s new leader by naming UC San Diego’s Jim Ragan the seventh head coach in its women’s golf program history in December of 2018. In a coaching career spanning 21 years, Ragan has coached at some of the most elite NCAA Division I schools in the country.
Ragan came to CSUMB with as rich a background as any coach in any sport in Otter history. He began his collegiate coaching career as an assistant at the University of Texas in 1994. From there, he moved on to head coaching spots at Vanderbilt (1997–2000) and the University of Oklahoma (2000–09). He then spent four years as the owner of Golf Team Performance before returning to collegiate coaching at UCSD in 2013.
Ragan was the 2001 and 2004 NCAA Region Coach of the Year and the Big 12 Coach of the Year in 2006 at Oklahoma. He led the Sooners to the 2001 NCAA Regional Championship and to the Big 12 title in 2006.
As an assistant coach at Texas, he helped the Longhorns finish third at the 1994 NCAA Championship Tournament.
During his collegiate coaching career, Ragan has mentored 13 All–Americans and 16 academic All–Americans. Amongst the most notable of his proteges are Brandt Snedeker (Vanderbilt), the 2007 PGA Tour Rookie of the year, and Anthony Kim (Oklahoma), a 3–time winner on the PGA Tour.
In addition to his collegiate coaching resume, Ragan has earned multiple certifications from the Titleist Performance Institute in fitness, biomechanics and coaching.
Ragan is a 1990 graduate of Mississippi State with a BBA in marketing/professional golf management. He began his teaching career at the Golf Digest Schools in Florida in 1988 and became a PGA member in 1992.
