No. 20 San Diego State Pulls Away For 13–4 Win

Ortega scores twice for Otters; Taylor makes 15 stops

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay scored first, but San Diego State pulled away in the half to earn a 13–4 win Thursday evening in The Otter Tank.

CSUMB got things going on its first possession when senior center Kaya Ortega (Fullerton HS) scored from the hole to give the Otters a 1–0 lead. SDSU responded with three consecutive goals to take the lead before Ortega added her second of the game late in the period to pull CSUMB to within 3–2.

Kaitlin Rooney (Morgan Hill/Presentation HS) scored midway through the second to help get the Otters to halftime trailing only 6–3. But the Aztecs opened the second half with another 3–goal burst and CSUMB couldn't get within five for the balance of the match.

Freshman Hailey Alexander (Palos Verdes HS) accounted for the fourth Otter goal with a 5–meter penalty late in the third quarter. Freshman Shelby Fortune (San Diego/Patrick Henry HS) added a pair of assists.
Freshman goalkeeper Megan Taylor (Capo Valley HS) led the defense with 15 saves and three steals.

CSUMB will close the regular season portion of its home schedule Friday when WWPA rival Cal State East Bay visits for a 1 p.m. first sprint. The Otters will host their annual alumni game Saturday at noon.
