Otters Enjoy Solid First Day At Patriot Invitational

CSUMB sits fifth in a loaded 12-team field with 18 holes to play

CARMEL, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay women's golf team enjoyed a solid first day at The Patriot Invitational, recording rounds of 305 and 304 to sit alone in fifth place after 36 holes at Poppy Hills Golf Course.

The tournament field includes nine of the Top 50 programs in NCAA Division II play, including No. 36 CSUMB. No. 4 Dallas Baptist leads at 2–over 570. No. 3 Limestone is second at 584. No. 10 Cal State San Marcos, No. 5 (NCAA Div. III) George Fox and CSUMB round out the top five.

The Patriot is being run in a 54–hole format, which is unusual for Division II college golf. Most tournaments in which the Otters participate run 36 holes. But the Otters seemed to have adapted well to the grueling two round opening day. Sophomore Isabel Carpenter's (San Luis Obispo HS) second round 73 was the team's best of the day, but consistency was key. CSUMB didn't post a scoring round higher than 78 Monday.

Carpenter and fellow sophomore Zoe Offield (Stockton/Tokay HS) went low for CSUMB, earning a share of 18th place at 151. Freshmen Cathy Tong (Newport Harbor HS) at 154 and Harley Richardson (Santa Barbara/California Connections Academy) at 155 also claimed spots in the top half of the 66-golfer field, placing 26 and 27th respectively. 

"We had some positives today, but we need to do better in a few areas moving forward," says CSUMB Head Coach Jim Ragan. "We did a good job of posting some decent scores on what seemed like an off day for us. Zoe and Isabel did a nice job stepping up and leading the team when we needed it. Hopefully, we can go out tomorrow and improve on today's performance."

The Patriot Invitational concludes with 18 holes Tuesday at Poppy Hills Golf Course.
