Otters Start Strong At Shark Shootout

Offield (5th), Carpenter (8th) in Top 10 at midway point

AIEA, Hawaii — Led by strong rounds from Zoe Offield (Stockton/Tokay HS) and Isabel Carpenter (San Luis Obispo HS), the Cal State Monterey Bay women's golf team got its season off to s strong start at the first round of the Southwest Airlines/HPU Shark Shootout Tuesday at Pearl Country Club.

Both Offield, who is fifth overall at 1–under 71, and Carpenter, who is tied for eighth at 1–over 73, find themselves in the hunt on the individual leaderboard. Kellie Yamane of host Hawaii Pacific tops the board at 5–under (67) with 18 holes remaining.

Led by their dynamic due, the Otters carded their second–best season–opening round ever with a 301 Monday. The only time they opened faster was in September of 2009, when they shot 296 at the Grand Canyon Invitational.

CSUMB will player in the leader's foursomes Wednesday with Cal State San Marcos, who leads the tournament at 290, Hawaii Pacific and Point Loma Nazarene. The Otters will enter the final round leading six nationally ranked schools, including No. 22 Biola University (303) and No. 4 West Texas A&M (308).

In addition to Offield and Carpenter, two other Otters earned spots in the top half of the 84–golfer field Monday. Makena Mehlert (Gig Harbor, Wash./Peninsula HS) shot 78 to earn a share of 27th place while Tilda Kvarnrud (Mariestad, Sweden) carded a 79 for a share of 35th.

"It was nice to get back to competition. We played really well at times but made a few mistakes coming down the stretch," says CSUMB Head Coach Jim Ragan. "Zoe and Isabel did a great job posting the scores we needed to get the final lead group pairing tomorrow. Hopefully we can pull things together and put up some better scores in the final round tomorrow."

The Southwest Airlines/HPU Shark Shootout concludes with 18 holes Wednesday at Pearl Country Club.
