Strong Runs Highlight Otter Day At Cougar Challenge

Multiple PRs for CSUMB as Otter preview the CCAA Championship course

September 26, 2021

SAN MARCOS, Calif. — Several strong runs, highlighted by a handful of personal records, highlighted a promising Cal State Monterey Bay day at the Cal State San Marcos Cougar Cross Country Challenge Saturday on the CSUSM Campus Course.

Junior Brooke Roy (Camus [Wash.] HS) led the Otter raft by placing 35th overall in 22:48.1. She was far from alone in this race, however, as fellow junior Hannah Marin (Paraclete HS) finished less than two seconds behind her with a PR of 22:49.8, 37 seconds faster than her previous best at Baylands Park in 2019.

The highlights didn't stop there as all six runners following Marin also recorded PRs Saturday. Freshmen Lisa Irvine (Roseville/Woodcreek HS) and Mackenzie Caprino (Salem, Ore./South Salem HS) each finished in the top half of the 139–runner field with their record runs. Irvine placed 44th in 22:57.7 while Caprino finished 63rd in 23:23.9.

Also setting PRs Saturday were freshmen Natalie Harper (Cosumnes Oaks HS) and Sierra Shaver (Irvine/Woodbridge HS) and juniors Trinitie Seeber (Rescue/Ponderosa HS) and Ashley O'Toole (Simi Valley HS).

Freshman Kim Tovar (Clovis HS), CSUMB's No. 4 runner, was well on her way to a PR before having to pull out midway through the race.  Nevertheless, they finished a solid eighth in the 13–team race.

"The women crushed it today against some of the top teams in the country—and that's with Kim pulling out," said CSUMB Head Coach Greg Rhines. "I project we would finished of as high as fifth with Kim.

"I am so happy for the women. They believed in themselves, in their training, and in each other today. Boy did it show."

Saturday proved to be tougher sledding for the CSUMB men as junior Nathan Garcia (El Centro/Southwest HS) was the only Otter to place in the top half of the 123–runner field. Garcia finished 47th in 25:47.5.

Freshman Diego Denson (Claremont HS) and sophomores Ryan Bradley (Sacramento/Sheldon HS) and Connor Farrow (Modesto/Beyer HS) also finished in the Top 100 for CSUMB.

"The guys went out way too fast and it kinda blew up after that," said Rhines. "They had an incredibly fast first mile, then learned quickly how to maintain pace after going out blazing fast. With more experience in racing 8k races they are going to shine."

The Otters will be off and training until Oct. 16 when they head to Santa Clara for the Bronco Invitational at the speedy Baylands Park Course. That meet will be CSUMB's final tune up before the CCAA Championship Oct. 23 in San Marcos.
