Lead changes hands five times in exciting match; Steele, Lyckfors score two goals each

SEASIDE, Calif. — In a match that featured five lead changes, the last one belonged to Sonoma State, which scored the final four goals to rally one last time in a 10–7 victory over Cal State Monterey Bay Saturday afternoon in The Otter Tank.

CSUMB got two goals each from Angela Steele (Agoura HS) and Nicole Lyckfors (Alameda HS), plus a goal and three assists from Marisa Lovos (Tualatin [Ore.] HS). That wasn't enough, however, to overcome hat tricks by Sonoma's Lily Carlon and Cassidy Mundt.

A Carlon goal just 24 seconds in staked Sonoma to an early lead before Steele and Lyckfors scored on the power play to put CSUMB up 2–1. The teams traded the next four goals, with Taylor Brown tying the game for the Seawolves at 4–4 in the final seconds of the first half.

Mundt scored twice in the first 70 seconds after the restart to give Sonoma a 2–goal lead. But Steele, Lyckfors and Smith scored the final three goals of the third period to give the Otters their final lead at 7–6, a lead they maintained until less than five minutes remained in regulation.

Taylor Brooks scored off a long outlet pass from goalkeeper Lisa Rodarmel to tie the game at the 4:58 mark. Carlon and Taylor Williams scored on consecutive Sonoma possessions to give Sonoma control before Brown scored into an empty net 12 seconds from time to seal the match.

In addition to her two goals, Steele collected a pair of steals on the defensive end for CSUMB. Senior Lucy Gates (Oceanside HS/Palomar College) chipped in two assists and a match–high three steals. Shelby Stephens (Stockton/Lincoln HS) went the distance in the cage and made a season–high 10 saves.

CSUMB hits the road again for a pair of matches in America's Finest City next weekend. The Otters will play at San Diego State Friday (Mar. 24) for a 5 p.m. match and at UC San Diego Saturday (Mar. 25) with first sprint against the Tritons scheduled for noon.
