SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State East Bay played a solid all–around volleyball match to sweep Cal State Monterey Bay and earn a CCAA Tournament bid Tuesday night with a 25–13, 25–20, 25–14 win in The Kelp Bed.
After an early side out war to open the match, East Bay finished the first set with a 14–5 run to establish the tone for the evening. The Otters sprang to life midway through the second set, pulling to within 19–18 before Darlene Lee served four consecutive points to give the Pioneers a 2–0 lead in the match.
East Bay opened the third set with a 9–2 run and never let up to complete the sweep.
Maddy Underwood (Spokane, Wash./Mead HS) led the Otters with 12 kills and eight digs.
Sam Brennan (Huntington Beach HS) hit .400 and
Chandler McKean (Visalia/Redwood HS) added a match–high three blocks.
THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… A Kiki Leuteneker kill sparked a set–ending 6–2 run that gave the second set to East Bay. The Otters never got traction in the third set.
STARTING BLOCKS… By adding three blocks to her portfolio Tuesday night,
Chandler McKean moved into the No. 8 spot on the CSUMB single season list for total blocks with 82. With one match remaining in the season, she won't catch
DJ Gresham-Ryder's school record of 104 blocks, but she could move as high as No. 4, where
Victoria Clardy sits with 88 in 2013.
THEY'RE ACES… With two aces versus East Bay,
Ashlynne Armstrong caught teammate
Paige Burrell and a quintet of former Otters for No. 15 on the CSUMB single season list at 29. Armstrong and Burrell need just three aces each to climb into the Top 10 of a tight list.
LEADERS OF THE RAFT… KILLS:
Maddy Underwood 12; BLOCKS:
Chandler McKean 3; ACES:
Ashlynne Armstrong 2; ASSISTS:
Whitney Hirst 15; DIGS:
Maddy Underwood 8.
THE LAST WORD… "We didn't play well tonight. We tried to make some adjustments, but we are still struggling to put the things we do everyday in practice into the match. We have to be better before playing a tough Humboldt team in their gym." –
CSUMB Head Coach Moe Melhart
THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their 2016 schedule with a trip to Arcata to take on Humboldt State Saturday (Nov. 12) at 7 p.m. The Otters defeated the Lumberjacks in five sets when they met in Seaside on Oct. 11.
GO OTTERS!
