Otters End Season With 5–Setter At Humboldt

Otters save two match points but can’t complete the comeback

ARCATA, Calif. — A season built with an eye to the future ended in epic fashion as the Cal State Monterey Bay volleyball team rallied to force a fifth set before falling to Humboldt State 16–25, 25–20, 25–19, 27–29, 15–9 Saturday night in Lumberjack Arena.

Sophomore Anela Visesio (Seaside HS) capped her season in style by putting down a career–high 22 kills to lead both teams. Maddy Underwood (Spokane, Wash./Mead HS) and Chandler McKean (Visalia/Redwood HS) also reached double figures with 13 and 10 kills respectively.

Underwood added 12 digs for her eighth double–double of the season. Whitney Hirst (Huntington Beach/Edison HS) joined her with a 49-assist, 11-dig double–double of her own.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… After consecutive kills by Anela Visesio pulled the Otters back to within 12–9 in the fifth, Nicole Bewley killed three consecutive balls to stem the Otter tide and finish the match.

CHIP OFF THE OLD BLOCK… The Otters totalled a season–high 24 block assists Saturday night. That mark ranks No. 6 on the CSUMB all–time list for block assists in a match.

CHIP OFF THE OLD BLOCK II… Junior setter Whitney Hirst collected seven blocks of her own in Saturday's match. That is an Otter match record for blocks by a setter.

CHIP OFF THE OLD BLOCK III… Sophomore middle blocker Chandler McKean had six of CSUMB's 24 block assists Saturday, giving her 71 for the season. That mark ranks No. 4 in the Otter season record book.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… KILLS: Anela Visesio 2; BLOCKS: Whitney Hirst 7, Chandler McKean 6; ACES: Paige Burrell 2; ASSISTS: Whitney Hirst 49; DIGS: Alá Olson 17.

THE LAST WORD… "We beat them in almost every statistical category tonight and if there is a way to end a season I would always want it to be in 5. I thought Anela Visesio had a great night and Maddy had another double–double for us. I Can't say enough about the fight of this team and how motivated they are to get going again with  eyes on 2017. We are thankful for (senior) Skyler Allen and all of her work and love for this program and we will miss her on the court next year." – CSUMB Head Coach Moe Melhart

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… Saturday's match put a lid on the 2016 CSUMB volleyball season.
