SEASIDE, Calif. -- A blustery Saturday afternoon featured doubleheader action between the Cal State Monterey Bay Baseball team and Cal State Dominguez Hills. After the Otters earned the 7–1 win in game one, the Toros came back to hand the Otters a 4–2 loss and split the twin bill at the Otter Sports Complex.
CAL STATE MONTEREY BAY 7, CAL STATE DOMINGUEZ HILLS 1The Otters struck early with three runs in the second inning all coming across on the three–run big fly from
Chris Blanton (Burlingame HS) for his fourth of the season to give MB a 3–0 lead. CSUMB got two more in the fourth inning on a two–RBI single by
Matt Urakami (San Jose, Calif. / Branham HS), to put the Otters up big, 5–0. With the score standing at 6–1,
Urakami knocked in one more run for his third RBI of the game. Together, Urakami and Gomez drove in six of the seven Otter runs.
Ryan Boydstun (La Quinta HS) was brilliant on the mound, shutting out the Toros over six and two–thirds innings en route to his fourth win of the season (4–2).
Jacob Cox (Madera, Calif. / Liberty HS) came in as the second reliever and after allowing a run in the eighth inning, struck out two in the ninth to shut the door on the Toros and solidify a 7–1 win.
The hot bat continued for Gomez as he went 2–for–3 with two runs scored in addition to the three–RBI days for Blanton and Urakami.
Will Rosado (Clovis East HS) drove in the other run for the Otters in the win. Juan Avena had three–hit game for CSUDH while Brandy Conlan has two hits.
CAL STATE DOMINGUEZ HILLS 4, CAL STATE MONTEREY BAY 2CSUDH began the game with an unearned run in the first inning to stake a 1–0 lead early. Three more runs came around in the third inning, including a two–run homerun by the Toros' Kamran Young off of CSUMB starter
Jeff Owen (Clovis East HS).The Otters showed offensive life in the fifth inning when
Hayden Duer (Davis HS) went deep for the third time this season, bringing in Urakami with him for two RBIs. The long ball put the Otters within two runs at a score of 4–2. However, CSUDH's Kevin Brown (6–2) was dominate and shut down the high–powered Otter offense with a complete game featuring eight strikeouts.
Owen (5–3) suffered the tough–luck loss after throwing a complete game with seven strikeouts three earned runs.
The Otters and Toros will wrap up the four–game series on Sunday. First pitch is set for 11 a.m. at the Otter Sports Complex.
