SEASIDE, Calif. -- With their eyes set on a series win against Cal State Dominguez Hills, the Cal State Monterey Bay Baseball team battled from behind to secure an 8–4 win and a 3–1 series victory in Sunday's series finalé at the Otter Sports Complex.
The Otters got off to a fast start, plating three runs in the first inning, highlighted by a
Ty Morris (Royal Oaks, Calif. / North Monterey County HS) triple that drove in the third run of the inning. In the top of the second, the Toros made it a game scoring four runs with two outs off of CSUMB starter
Will McCabe (North Salinas HS), to take a 4–3 lead into the third.,
CSUMB tied it in the third inning and then broke the 4–4 tie in the fourth inning on a
Curtis Gomez (Watsonville, Calif. / St. Francis HS) single, bringing in
Justin Flores from second base.
Kory Groves (Citrus Heights, Calif. / Oakmont HS), who came in on relief of McCabe in the second inning, was flawless. Groves (4–1) pitched seven and a third innings of relief, allowing no runs on four hits while striking out seven batters.
The Otters extended their one–run lead to four in the eighth inning with one run coming in on a bases loaded wild pitch.
Kevin Davidson (Yucaipa HS), who had been quiet for most of the series, sent a ground ball passed the drawn in infield and into center field to score two more runs and give CSUMB an 8–4 win.
In addition to Davidson's two RBIs, Gomez contributed two RBIs, as well. Flores, Morris and
Hayden Duer (Davis HS) each had one RBI in the win. Fernando Gallegos had a three–hit, one–RBI day at the plate and also scored a run. Gallegos (5-–6) was tagged with the loss in relief, as well.
CSUMB improves to 28-18, 23-13 CCAA. Monterey Bay will finish out the 2015 season at home against Sonoma State on May 1–3. First pitch on Friday is set for 3 p.m.
