SEASIDE, Calif. -- With a CCAA Tournament berth sealed up, the Cal State Monterey Bay Baseball team welcomed Sonoma State to town for a 4-game series. On Friday afternoon, the Otters got off to a slow start, but the powerful offense came out in the middle innings, leading the Otters to a 7–2 win over the Seawolves at the Otter Sports Complex.
Sonoma State scored the first two runs of the game off of CSUMB starter
Cody Gappa (Corning, Calif. / Red Bluff HS), to put the Otters in a 2–0 hole early on. However, CSUMB came back in the bottom of the third inning with three runs on RBI hits from
Justin Flores (Fresno, Calif. / Clovis West HS), Ty Morris (Royal Oaks, Calif. / North Monterey County HS), and
Chris Blanton (Burlingame HS), giving the Otters a 3–2 lead after three full innings.
Gappa held strong for the remainder of his outing as he allowed two runs while scattering four hits in a six–inning outing. The senior also recorded five strikeouts in his sixth win of the season (6–4).
Kevin Davidson (Yucaipa HS) came through in the fourth inning with a two–RBI double to extend the Otter lead to 5–2. CSUMB scored twice in the seventh inning against SSU reliever Tyler Sanders on a two–run homerun by Morris, his third of the season, giving the Otters a 7–2 lead and eventual victory in game one.
Morris led the offense with three RBIs and a two hit day at the plate, while four other Otters contributed two hits in the 15 hit outpouring.
The Otters improve to 29–18, 24–13 CCAA and will play a doubleheader against Sonoma State on Saturday afternoon beginning at noon.
