SEASIDE, Calif. -- The Cal State Monterey Bay Baseball team needed extra innings in order to complete the doubleheader sweep of Sonoma State on Saturday afternoon at the Otter Sports Complex. The Otters handled things in convincing fashion with a 10–1 victory in game one. CSUMB had to come back from a four–run deficit and take the nightcap into the eighth inning before a walk off win sealed a 7–6 win.
CAL STATE MONTEREY BAY 10, SONOMA STATE 1The Otters got off to a quick start with three runs in the first inning, but recorded two RBIs as
Brian Bostjancic (Forest Knolls, Calif. / Sir Francis Drake HS) came home on a wild pitch after driving in a run on a triple. A run in the third inning put the Otters up 4–0 in the early innings. CSUMB starter
Ryan Boydstun (La Quinta HS) got into trouble in the fourth inning after walking the bases loaded. A run came in on the only hit allowed by Boydstun in five innings of work.
Four Otters got an RBI each in the four–run fifth inning.
Kevin Davidson (Yucaipa HS) got the scoring started with a RBI double and was followed by
Ty Morris (Royal Oaks, Calif. / North Monterey County HS) who doubled in a run as well. A fielder's choice RBI and a sacrifice fly rounded out the inning, giving the Otters a commanding 8–1 lead. A
Will Rosado (Clovis East HS) big fly in the sixth inning followed by a solo run in the seventh inning put CSUMB up 10–1, solidifying the winning score.
Boydstun (5–2) earned the win after allowing one run and a hit with four strikeouts and six walks in five innings. Morris led the offense with his second consecutive three–RBI game.
CAL STATE MONTEREY BAY 7, SONOMA STATE 6 (F/8)Sonoma State jumped on CSUMB starter
Jeff Owen (Clovis East HS) early, plating six runs in the first three innings. Highlighting a five–run third inning was a three–run homerun by Adam Manzer. Owen settled down after the third inning and proceeded to shut down the Seawolves for the remainder of his five–inning outing.
Trailing 6–3, the Otters clawed back and were able to tie the game at six runs apiece in the fifth inning, kick started by a
Brian Hamm (Pleasanton, Calif. / Amador Valley HS) solo shot; his second in the last two weeks. Rosado then hit a sacrifice fly to bring the Otters within one and Morris came charging home on a passed ball to knot it up heading to the sixth inning.
A combine relief effort from
Andrew Astone (Fresno, Calif. / San Joaquin Memorial HS), Christian Stubbs (Mission Viejo, Calif. / San Joan Hills HS), and
Jacob Cox (Madera, Calif. / Liberty HS) kept the Seawolves off the scoreboard, allowing CSUMB to work their offensive magic.
Justin Flores (Clovis West HS) singled to start the eighth inning and was moved over on a wild pitch and a single from Davidson. SSU chose to intentionally walk Hamm to load the bases and pitch to
Hayden Duer (Davis HS). Sonoma brought in a fifth infielder, but a high–bouncing ball backed up the SSU third baseman and beat the defense and allowed Flores to score the winning run.
Hamm contributed two runs and two RBIs in the 7–6 win, while also recorded three hits. Cox (4-1) earned his fourth win in relief.
Monterey Bay improves to 31–18, 26–13 CCAA and aim for a series sweep of the Seawolves on Sunday. First pitch of senior day is set for 11 a.m.
Go Otters!
