SEASIDE, Calif. -- The Otters trailed by as many as five runs on Sunday afternoon, but never felt out of it as they clawed back to be in position for the second consecutive walkoff win. A familiar face to the situation,
Hayden Duer (Davis HS) drove a 1–2 pitch to right field that sent the Otter faithful into a frenzy as the Cal State Monterey Bay Baseball team completed the comeback and series sweep of Sonoma State at the Otter Sports Complex.
SSU got out to an early 4–0 lead before CSUMB put its first run on the board in the bottom of the third inning. Down 4–1 the Otters matched the Seawolves with a two–run fourth inning to keep the deficit at three runs at 6–3. Devin Alexander hit the fourth homerun for the Seawolves to give them one run in the sixth inning.
Chris Blanton (Burlingame HS) hopped on the homerun train in the sixth inning for as the junior outfielder smacked a big fly (5) over the right field wall for two runs, closing the gap to two at 7–5.
Duer's heroics began in the seventh inning when the freshman catcher knocked in a run on a sacrifice fly to bring the Otters within one run at 7–6. In the eighth, it was
Justin Flores (Fresno, Calif. / Clovis West HS) who drove in the tying run, but was thrown out trying to stretch a a double to a triple to end the eighth inning.
Christian Stubbs (Mission Viejo, Calif. / San Joan Hills HS) pitched wonderfully as the third relief pitcher and, rightfully so, earned his second win of the season (2–3). Stubbs kept the Seawolf offense at bay allowing two hits in three shutout innings.
That gave the Otters a chance for the walkoff in the bottom of the ninth.
Kevin Davidson (Yucaipa HS) led off the inning with a double.
Brian Hamm (Pleasanton, Calif. / Amador Valley HS) was hit by a pitch to follow and
Ty Morris (Royal Oaks, Calif. / North Monterey County HS) loaded the bases by drawing a walk. Enter Duer who was able to line a ball to right field, driving in the winning run for the second game in a row. The dog pile ensued as CSUMB was able to wrap up the comeback victory and a series sweep of Sonoma State.
Monterey Bay finishes the 2015 regular season 32–18 overall and 27–13 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. The Otters will be the three seed in the CCAA Tournament and will face UC San Diego on Thursday, May 7th. CSUMB split the season series with the Tritons in San Diego.
