SEASIDE, Calif. -- There was no shortage of offense in the opening game between the Cal State Monterey Bay Baseball team and the San Francisco State Gators on Thursday afternoon at the Otter Sports Complex. The Otters and Gators combine to score 27 runs on 38 hits. However, it was the final three runs that mattered the most as
Kevin Davidson (Yucaipa HS) smacked his second homerun of the game to send CSUMB away in walkoff fashion with the 15–12 victory.
SF State got off to a fast start against CSUMB starter
Jacob Cox (Madera, Calif. / Liberty HS) stacking up six runs in the first two innings, giving the visitors a 6–0 lead early. However, the Otter offense picked up in the bottom of the second, gaining ground with a four–run inning.
While CSUMB tied the game three times, they were never able to get over the hump and take the lead. However, in the eighth inning
Curtis Gomez (Watsonville, Calif. / St. Francis HS) started things off with a double and eventually came into score on one of Davidson's five RBIs, giving the Otters their first lead of the game at 12–11. The one–run lead lasted for a half inning as the Gators came back to tie the game for the fourth time in the top of the ninth inning, sending the game into extra innings knotted at 12–12.
Kory Groves (Citrus Heights, Calif. / Oakmont HS), who blew the save in the ninth, came back in the 10th inning and struck out the side, leaving the door open for the heart of the Otter lineup to attempt the walkoff win. Gomez came up clutch to lead off the inning with a single up the middle, followed by a single to center field by
Justin Flores (Fresno, Calif. / Clovis West HS), putting runners on first and second with nobody out. All that was needed was a base hit by Davidson to end the game, but the junior first baseman blasted a 2–1 count over the right field wall to end the game on a three–run homerun. The 15–12 win was the second time this season in which the Otters have completed a walkoff win and are 3–0 in extra inning games.
Davidson led the Otter offense, going 5–for–6 with five RBIs and 4 runs scored and set the single game record for total bases in a game (12).
Matt Urakami (San Jose, Calif. / Branham HS) was also a fan of the long ball as he hit his second big fly of the season as part of his 2–for–3, two RBI, three run day at the plate.
Ty Morris (Royal Oaks, Calif. / North Monterey County HS) also contributed four RBIs in the win. In a slew of six pitchers used by coach White, Groves (1–0) came out with his first win of the season.
For the Gators, Jacob Lopez drove in three RBIs, while Mark Lindsay and Chad Thurston contributed two each. Reliever Cory Davis was tagged with the loss and falls to 1–2.
CSUMB improves to 21–12, 17–8 CCAA, while SFSU falls to 11–16, 10–11 CCAA. Monterey Bay will head to San Francisco for the doubleheader portion of the 4–game series tomorrow. First pitch is set for noon.
Go Otters!
