SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. --, The doubleheader portion of the 4–game series against San Francisco State brought the Cal State Monterey Bay Baseball team north to San Francisco. After scoring 15 runs in game one of the series, the Otters could only come up with six total runs as they dropped both games of the twinbill to the Gators by scores of 5–3 and 4–3 on Friday at Maloney Field.
SAN FRANCISCO STATE 5, CAL STATE MONTEREY BAY 3The Otters played from behind in game one of the double dip as, SF State scored in the first inning. After the Gators plated a run in the fourth inning to take a 2–0 lead, CSUMB came back to tie it in the fifth inning on a two–RBI single through the right side of the infield by
Matt Urakami (San Jose, Calif. / Branham HS).The Otters took their first lead of the game in the seventh inning after four walks by SFSU pitching brought in the third run of the game for the Otters, giving the visitors the lead at 3–2. However, the CSUMB bullpen could not hold the one–run lead as SF State scored three times in the eighth inning to take the eventual 5–3 win.
Urakami led the offense with two RBIs, while Connor Fraser contributed two for hosts in the win. CSUMB starting pitcher
Jeff Owen (Clovis East HS) was faced with a no decision after allowing seven hits, two runs (one earned), and striking out three over seven innings of work.
SAN FRANCISCO STATE 4, CAL STATE MONTEREY BAY 3The Otters jumped out to a 1–0 in the first inning, on
Kevin Davidson's (Yucaipa HS) 40th RBI of the season. However, the Gators doubled the Otter effort in the bottom half of the first scoring twice to take a 2–1 lead. CSUMB tied it at 2–2 in the fifth inning due to a wild pitch, allowing
Shawn Wheeler (Citrus Heights, Calif. / Bella Vista HS) to score from third.
The Gators regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth as the Otters traded two outs for one run, allowing Fernando Escobar to score on a double play, giving SFSU a 3–2 lead.
CSUMB tied it once again in the top of the sixth inning at 3–3 on a two–out pinch hit RBI single by
Chris Blanton (Burlingame HS).Nick Milone (Northridge, Calif. / Chatsworth HS) was able to get the first shut down inning for the Otters in the sixth inning, giving them a chance to take the lead in the seventh inning. A Davidson single followed by
Brian Hamm's (Pleasanton, Calif. / Amador Valley HS) fielder's choice, but Hamm would be thrown out at second base on an attempted steal to end any offensive threat.
The Gators started the bottom of the seventh with a single to center and after a stolen base and an infield single got the runner to third, CSUMB brought in the left fielder to give them five infielders. Jacob Lopez then hit a hard liner through the left side passed the drawn in defense to score the winning run and give the Otters a 4-3 loss.
Davidson recorded three of the five Otter hits in the game and also tallied an RBI. Chad Thurston and Garrett Heisinger each had one RBI in the win.
The Otters fall to 21–14, 17–10 CCAA while the Gators move to 13–16, 12–11 CCAA. Monterey Bay and San Francisco State will wrap up the series tomorrow in Seaside with first pitch set for noon.
