Carr vernon Selected to 2015 Palmer Cup Team

Men's Golf | April 17, 2015

NORMAN, Okla. -- Cal State Monterey Bay men's golfer Carr Vernon (Poplar Bluff HS) has been selected to represent the U.S. in the 2015 Palmer Cup. Vernon will be a competitor in what some call the "College Ryder Cup" as the only player from a non–Division I school.

The junior will be one of 10 golfers to represent the United States. In addition to his teammates, Vernon will be playing against 10 other collegiate golfers who hail from Europe in the Ryder Cup–style competition.

"To have someone represent Cal State Monterey Bay at the Palmer Cup is simply amazing," says head coach Jason Owen. "This will be the greatest event that these guys play in, short of a PGA Major."

The annual contest will be played June 12-14 at Rich Harvest Farms outside Sugar Grove, Ill. The entire Palmer Cup competition will be able to view live on the Golf Channel.

" I am excited to represent my country in the game of golf," says Vernon. "I think that if I can have fun and enjoy it, I will be able to do well."

The Palmer Cup began in 1997 as a competition between Great Britain and Ireland and the U.S.A. In 2003 a decision was made to begin including European players in the selection pool. Since 1997 the US holds an overall record lead of 9–8–1. Notable professional golfers who have played in the passed Palmer Cups include: US – Matt Kuchar ('98, '99); Nick Watney ('02); Brandt Snedeker ('03); Dustin Johnson ('07); Rickie Fowler ('08); EUROPE – Luke Donald ('98, '99); Rory Sabbatini ('98); Graeme McDowell ('00, '01).
