SEASIDE, Calif. -- With its sights set on a series split with #7 Cal Poly Pomona, the #24 Cal State Monterey Bay Baseball team went to battle with the Broncos after being swept in Saturday's doubleheader. CSUMB's
Cody Gappa (Corning, Calif. / Red Bluff HS) had a great start, allowing one run in six innings pitched while striking out five. However, the one run would be enough as Pomona starter Ryan Olsen and three relievers silenced the Otters bats, handing CSUMB the 1–0 loss on Sunday afternoon at the Otter Sports Center.
The Pomona run came in the fourth inning after Gappa loaded the bases on a walk which was followed by a hit–by–pitch to Ryan Webberley, allowing Nick Cooksey to trot in from third.
The Otter offense did have its chances to score, but were unable to get the big hit to light up the scoreboard, leaving eight runners on base. Four different Otters had in a hit in the game, highlighted by a
Ty Morris (Royal Oaks, Calif. / North Monterey County HS) double in the seventh inning.
Gappa (2–1) was faced with the loss after he and reliever
Kory Groves (Citrus Heights, Calif. / Oakmont HS) held the Broncos to one run.
CSUMB moves to 13–7, 9–3 CCAA while CPP improves to 14–4, 6–2 CCAA. Monterey Bay will return to action Friday, March 13, when the begin a 4–game series against Cal State Stanislaus. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. on Friday in Seaside.
