SEASIDE, Calif. -- Coming off their first series loss since the season opener, the Cal State Monterey Bay Baseball team was hungry to get back into the win column. In the opening game of a 4–game series with Cal State Stanislaus, the Otters were able to hold on to a one–run lead and get the 4–3 victory thanks to another outstanding start by freshman
Greg Steinbeck (Hollister, Calif. / San Benito High School) and a two–inning save by
Kory Groves (Citrus Heights, Calif. / Oakmont HS) on Friday afternoon at the Otter Sports Complex.
CSUMB struck first, plating one run in the first inning on a
Kevin Davidson (Yucaipa HS) RBI single, scoring
Will Rosado (Clovis East HS) who was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Rosado later scored the second run of the game on a solo home run (3) to stretch the Otter lead to 2–0 in the third inning. The Otters wouldn't stop there as RBI singles from Davidson and
Ty Morris (Royal Oaks, Calif. / North Monterey County HS) in the third made it a 4–0 game.
The Warriors made it interesting scoring twice in the fifth inning and once in the seventh, however, all three runs were unearned as the Otter infield committed four throwing errors to allow the Stanislaus players to reach base. Rosado made what may have been a game–saving catch when he dove for a sinking line drive off the bat of James Heller, prompting a throw to first base to double off Michael Chavarria and end the Warrior threat in the eighth inning.
After throwing seven solid innings and striking out five batters, Steinbeck (6–0) remained undefeated, earning his conference–leading sixth win of the season. Groves started the eighth inning and proceeded to strike out four Warriors while not allowing a hit in two innings pitched, earning his second save of the season.
Davidson contributed two RBIs increasing his season total to a team–leading 25. Rosado and Morris each had one RBI in the game. For the Warriors, Scott Stetson went 4–for–4 and scored a run, while Skippy Ferreria had two RBIs in the loss.
Monterey Bay improves to 14–7, 10–3 CCAA while Stanislaus falls to 6–12, 1–7 CCAA. The series shifts to Turlock, Calif. on Saturday, March 14, for doubleheader action beginning at 11 a.m.
