Boydstun’s Gem Propels Otters To Twinbill Sweep of Warriors

Duer with three RBIs in game one win

TURLOCK, Calif. -- In the road portion of the home–and–home series against Cal State Stanislaus, the Cal State Monterey Bay Baseball team traveled to Turlock for doubleheader action. After all the scoring took place in the first four innings, CSUMB earned the 9–4 win in game one. The Otters followed up with a narrow 2–0 victory in game two of the afternoon to secure the series win after a the doubleheader sweep.

GAME 1 | CAL STATE MONTEREY BAY 9, CAL STATE STANISLAUS 5
The Otters lit up the scoreboard early on with a four spot in the first inning highlighted by a Hayden Duer (Davis HS) two–RBI double, giving the Otters an early 4–0 lead. CSUMB tacked on one more run in the second inning on a Will Rosado (Clovis East HS) sacrifice fly ball putting the Otters up 5–0.

Cal State Stanislaus did not stay idle for long as the Warriors had their big inning in the bottom of the second. Down five and facing CSUMB starter Jeff Owen (Clovis East HS), Stanislaus compiled a five–run inning, including two RBIs from Marcus Mastrobouni and Scott Stetson, effectively tying the game at 5–5 in the early going.

The Otters broke the tie in the fourth inning as CSUMB scored on a sacrifice fly,, a fielding error, and back–to–back walks with the bases loaded putting four runs across, giving CSUMB a 9–5 lead.
The four run lead was enough to give Owen his third win of the season (3–1) after throwing five innings of work while fanning four Warriors. Andrew Astone (Fresno, Calif. / San Joaquin Memorial HS) earned a four–inning save (1) after coming in on relief at the start of the sixth inning.

"Playing at CSUS is always a challenge and I'm really proud of our guys," says head coach Walter White (@MBCoach_White). "When the games were tight, we stayed composed and continued to play our game."

Offensively for the Otters, Duer and Rosado recorded three and two RBIs, respectively. Four different Otters compiled two hits in the win. For the Warriors, Mastrobouni and Stetson each tallied two hits, while Molina and Ferreria each had three hits.

GAME 2 | CAL STATE MONTEREY BAY 2, CAL STATE STANISLAUS 0
The Otters got on the board early once again on an RBI single by Justin Flores (Fresno, Calif. / Clovis West HS), to score Curtis Gomez (Watsonville, Calif. / St. Francis HS) to give CSUMB a 1–0 lead for a majority of the game. CSUMB got an insurance run in the top of the seventh on an RBI single by Matt Urakami (San Jose, Calif. / Branham HS) scoring pinch runner Jordan Zaragoza (Vallejo, Calif. / St. Patrick/St.Vincent HS) from third, giving the Otters a 2–0 edge and eventual win, sweeping the Saturday doubleheader.

Ryan Boydstun (La Quinta HS) pitched a gem, throwing a complete game shutout scattering six hits, striking out five and issuing no walks, moving his record to 2–1 on the season.

"This performance is what we have come to expect from Ryan (Boydstun)," coach White says about his junior pitcher. "When (Boydstun) has command of his fastball, his breaking ball and change up become very effective."

The Otters return to the Otter Sports Complex to finish the 4–game series with the Warriors on Sunday, March 15. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
