SEASIDE, Calif. -- There was no shortage of offense in the final game of the 4–game series between the Cal State Monterey Bay Baseball team and Cal State Stanislaus, as the teams combine for 20 runs and 31 hits. However, CSUMB had the edge, outscoring CSUS 14–6 on its way to a series sweep on Sunday afternoon at the Otter Sports Complex; its third sweep of the conference season.
The Otters got things started by scored five times spread across three innings, however, the Warriors kept it close scoring three times in top of third, giving CSUMB a two run edge at 5–3 after three innings. Stanislaus pushed one across in the fourth inning, pushing CSUMB starter
Cody Gappa (Corning, Calif. / Red Bluff HS) out of the game after three and one–third innings pitched.
CSUMB busted open a four spot in the fifth inning, highlighted by a two–RBI single by
Justin Flores (Fresno, Calif. / Clovis West HS), to give the Otters a 9–4 lead after five innings of play. After the Warriors got two runs in the sixth inning it seemed as if the bats had quieted as both teams were held scoreless in the seventh inning; the only inning where neither team scored.
The pent up offensive energy was released by the Otters in the eighth inning, illuminating a five–run inning on the scoreboard, all before the first out was recorded.
Will Rosado, (Clovis East HS) got the inning started with a leadoff hit–by–pitch.
Curtis Gomez (Watsonville, Calif. / St. Francis HS) followed with a single, advancing Rosado to third. Flores then walked to load the bases, setting the table for
Kevin Davidson (Yucaipa HS), who pushed across two runs on a single to left center.
A.C. Nunez (Corona, Calif. / Roosevelt HS) stepped up and smacked his first home run of the season over the left field wall, good for three runs and a 14–6 Otter lead and eventual win.
"It is difficult to win a game in the CCAA, let alone sweep a series," says head coach Walter White (@MBCoach_White). "I am proud of the way we competed, especially how we continued to answer back each time CSUS made a run at us."
Both Davidson and Nunez drove in three runs in the game, while Flores and
Matt Urakami (San Jose, Calif. / Branham HS) pushed across two runs. Rosado, Gomez, Nunez, and
Ty Morris (Royal Oaks, Calif. / North Monterey County HS) all had big days at the plate, recording three hits each, while Rosado came around to score three times in the victory. Gappa was credited with his third win of the season (3–1).
For the Warriors, both Michael Chavarria and Christian Kahler tallied two RBIs. Marcus Mastrobouni had a three–hit day at the plate, while Scott Stetson and James Heller came around to score twice. Chris Sauls took the loss (0–1) in his first start of the season.
The Otters improve their record to 17–7, 13–3 CCAA, matching UC San Diego for the top spot in conference play. Monterey Bay will endure its longest time away from the confines of the OSC as they play the next eight games on the road beginning Saturday, March 21 at Cal State L.A. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
Go Otters!
