SEASIDE, Calif. -- It took extra innings to decide game one of the four–game series against Cal State L.A., but in the top of the 11th inning a big fly off the bat of
Kevin Davidson (Yucaipa HS) lifted the Otters to a 6–5 win over the Golden Eagles in game on Saturday night.
The Otters scored first in the second inning on singles by
Ty Morris (Royal Oaks, Calif. / North Monterey County HS) and
Shawn Wheeler (Citrus Heights, Calif. / Bella Vista HS) to take a 2–0 lead early on. CSUMB extended the lead to 4–0 after
Chris Blanton (Burlingame HS) hit an RBI double and
Matt Urakami (San Jose, Calif. / Branham HS) smashed his first homerun of the season to hand the Otters a 4–0 lead after three and a half innings.
The bottom of the fourth inning was when the Golden Eagles began to make their comeback, scoring one to close the gap to 4–1 after four full innings. The Otters scored once more in the sixth inning on Wheeler's second RBI single of the game putting the Otters up 5–1.
After
Greg Steinbeck (Hollister, Calif. / San Benito High School) was relieved of his duties after five innings of one run ball he eventually faced his first no decision of the season. The relievers of CSUMB went on to allow CSULA back into the game as it scored four unanswered runs to tie the game at 5–5 after seven full innings.
The scoring was held at bay in the following three innings, taking the game into extra innings. With the Otters up to bat in the 11th inning with one out, Davidson stepped up to the plate and effectively ended the game with a solo shot to left center field to give CSUMB a 6–5 lead.
Jacob Cox (Madera, Calif. / Liberty HS) finished things off in the bottom of the inning, earning his third win of the season (3–0).
"Cox kept us in the game ad then shut down LA in the 11th to earn the win," says head coach Walter White (@MBCoach_White). "KD (
Kevin Davidson) came up big for us again with the game–winning blast. It's a good win for us."
Davidson, Morris, and Wheeler each had two hits in the game including two RBIs from Wheeler. For the Golden Eagles, Rodrigo Martinez led the way with four hits, while Kyle Peralta contributed three hits.
Monterey Bay wins its fifth game in a row and improves to 18–7, 14–3 CCAA. The series continues Sunday, March 22, with doubleheader action beginning at 1 a.m.
