Otters Drop Sunday Twinbill to Golden Eagles

CSULA gets to Otter pitching, hands Otters a pair of losses on Sunday

SEASIDE, Calif. -- After winning the extra–inning thriller on Saturday night, the Cal State Monterey Bay Baseball team looked to ride the momentum into the Sunday doubleheader against Cal State L.A. at Reeder Field. However, the Golden Eagles became familiar with the Otter pitchers in both games of the afternoon scoring six and eight runs to hand CSUMB losses of 5–6 and 3–8.

The Otters did what they have done so many times before, score first and early. On an RBI single by Justin Flores (Fresno, Calif. / Clovis West HS) CSUMB took a 1–0 lead after the first inning. The gold and blue would get some offensive production from Hayden Duer (Davis HS) and Curtis Gomez (Watsonville, Calif. / St. Francis HS) as RBI singles from each put the Otters on top 3–0 in the fourth inning.

For the middle innings, it was all Golden Eagles as the hosts came from behind to grab a 6–3 lead after the eighth inning. Five different players drove in a run in the comeback effort for CSULA. The Otters tried a comeback of their own in the top of the ninth, scoring twice on two–out RBI singles by Josh Heinz (Santa Clarita, Calif. / West Ranch HS and Ty Morris (Royal Oaks, Calif. / North Monterey County HS), but left the bases loaded as Duer could not drive in the tying run, striking out to end the game and lose the game 6–5.

Jeff Owen (Clovis East HS) was tagged with the loss (3–2) after allowing five runs (three earned) in six and one–third innings of work for the Otters. Five different Otters recorded RBIs in the game while four CSUMB players accounted for two hits at the plate. The Otters racked up 13 hits for the game.

Paul Martinez had the best game at the plate for CSULA, going 3–for–4 with an RBI and a run scored.

It was the Golden Eagles who got on the board first in game two of Sunday's doubleheader, putting the Otters in a 3–0 hole after the first frame. CSUMB got one back in the second inning after Shawn Wheeler (Citrus Heights, Calif. / Bella Vista HS) drove in Morris from second to close the gap to two runs at 3–1.

The Otters scored once in the sixth and once in the seventh inning, but it was all CSULA as the hosts plated two runs in the fourth and three runs in the fifth inning, handing the Otters the eventual 8–3 loss.

Only four of the eight runs allowed by CSUMB starter Ryan Boydstun (La Quinta HS) were earned as the Otter defense was shaky, committing three errors in the game. Boydstun (2–2) was faced with the loss after exiting the game after four and two–thirds innings.

Flores and Kevin Davidson (Yucaipa HS) each had two hits in the nine hit effort for the Otters. Three different Golden Eagles had two hits while Trevor Meleski contributed two RBIs in the win.

The Otters drop to 18–9, 14–5 CCAA after begin swept in the Sunday twinbill. Monterey Bay will wrap up the series with Cal State L.A. on Monday, March 23. First pitch is set for 11 a.m.

Go Otters!
