SEASIDE, Calif. -- After a win in game one the series, the Cal State Monterey Bay Baseball team was in the drivers seat against Cal Poly Pomona, heading into the Saturday doubleheader. Pomona came out with other plans as the seventh–ranked Broncos handed the Otters a pair of losses, something the Otters had not seen since Valentines Day. A 4–9 loss coupled with a 0–2 loss capped the CSUMB win streak at 11 games, tying the 2013 Otters for the longest in program history.
GAME 1 | CAL POLY POMONA 9, CAL STATE MONTEREY BAY 4Cal Poly Pomona plated a run in the second inning to grab its first lead of the series, off of CSUMB starter
Jeff Owen (Clovis East HS). Owen settled down in the third and proceeded to throw six innings of one–run baseball, striking out four.
The Otters sparked their offense when
Shawn Wheeler (Citrus Heights, Calif. / Bella Vista HS) led off the fifth inning with a double and them came around to score on an RBI single by
Will Rosado (Clovis East HS). The inning continued with a
Brian Bostjancic (Forest Knolls, Calif. / Sir Francis Drake HS) single, setting the table for
Kevin Davidson (Yucaipa HS) who blasted a three–run home run (5) to give the Otters a 4–1 lead.
The lead would hold until the eighth inning when the wheels fell off for the Otters. The Broncos were able to capitalize on three Otter relievers as well as two Otter errors, to bring across eight runs in the inning, highlighted by a three–run home run by Nick Cooksey to give the Broncos a 9–4 lead. The Otter offense was held stagnant as they were faced with their first loss in eleven games, 9–4.
GAME 2 | CAL POLY POMONA 2, CAL STATE MONTEREY BAY 0After two scoreless innings, the Broncos broke through in the third plating one run on a Cooksey single, to take a 1–0 lead. One run would be all the Broncos would need as CSUMB was not able to figure out CPP starter Chris Powell (3–0) who threw six and two–thirds innings of two–hit ball, fanning 10 Otters. Pomona got an insurance run in the sixth to go up 2–0, the eventual final score of the night cap.
CSUMB starter
Ryan Boydstun (La Quinta HS) was faced with the tough–luck loss as he allowed two runs in the complete game while striking out five.
Three Otters recorded a hit in the loss, while Cooksey and Caleb Romo recorded the RBIs for the Broncos.
CSUMB falls to 13–6, 9–2 CCAA after being swept in the doubleheader, while CPP moves to 13–4, 5–2 CCAA. Monterey Bay and Pomona will wrap up the 4–game series Sunday, March 8, with a single game scheduled for a noon start time.
Go Otters!,
