SEASIDE, Calif. -- Off to it's best start in program history, the 24–ranked Cal State Monterey Bay Baseball team picked up where they left off, beating the seventh–ranked Cal Poly Pomona Broncos handedly, 12–3 on Friday afternoon at the Otter Sports Complex. Both pitching and power were featured in this one as freshman starter
Greg Steinbeck (Hollister, Calif. / San Benito High School) threw eight innings of one–run baseball, prompting the Otter offense to score 12 runs on their way to their eleventh consecutive victory, and Steinbeck's fifth win of the season (5–0).
CSUMB hit Pomona starting pitcher Max Bethell hard, scoring three runs in the first inning to take an early 3–0 lead. Solo home runs by
Will Rosado (Clovis East HS) and
Curtis Gomez (Watsonville, Calif. / St. Francis HS) in the second inning put the Otter on top 5–0, where they would not look back.
The Broncos got on the board in the third inning, but the Otters countered with a run of its own, staking a 6–1 lead after the first three innings. After a run in the the sixth inning to make it 7–1, CSUMB got three runs in the seventh inning on what should have been the third out of the inning. A bases loaded fly ball to center field was muffed by the Pomona outfielder, allowing all three runners to score as they were off and running on any contact.
Cal Poly Pomona managed two runs in the top half of the ninth inning, but the nine run lead was too much to overcome as the Otters took the 12–3 win to open the series.
In addition to Gomez's first home run of the season, Rosado hit his second. Gomez also led the way scoring three runs, while Rosado and
Kevin Davidson (Yucaipa HS) each came around to score twice in the victory. Three Otters contributed two hits in the win, while Gomez recorded three in four at–bats. For the Broncos, Christian Kelley went 2–for–3 with a run scored, while Mike Philp and Brennen Salgado each had pinch–hit RBIs.
CSUMB moves to a 13–4, 9–0 CCAA, while CPP falls to 11–3, 3–2 CCAA. The series continues Saturday, March 7, with doubleheader action beginning at 11 a.m.
