SEASIDE, Calif. -- After scoring 14 runs just a day ago, the Cal State Monterey Bay Baseball team came back and scored 18 runs on their way to an 18–8 win in game one of Saturday's doubleheader. Game two proved to a bit more difficult, but the Otters fought back to complete a comeback win in walk–off fashion securing a 7–6 victory and guaruntee of a series win over Cal State East Bay.
CAL STATE MONTEREY BAY 18, CAL STATE EAST BAY 8 -- BOX SCOREAfter three lead changes to start the game, the Otters found themselves tied at five with the Pioneers after four innings of play. However, it would not remain a close game for long as CSUMB recorded their first double–digit inning of the season plating 10 runs on seven hits in the fifth inning giving CSUMB a commanding 15–5 lead.
Chris Blanton (Burlingame HS) stole the show, accounting for four RBIs in the inning including a three–run homerun (1) in his second at–bat of the fifth. Blanton finished the game perfectly, going 5–for–5 with six RBIs and three runs scored.
CSUEB got two runs across in the top of the sixth, but the Otters countered with three more runs in bottom half of the sixth inning, staking an 18–7 lead. CSUMB went on to win game one 18–8 after CSUEB scored their final run in the top of the ninth.
Jeff Owen (Clovis East HS) earned his first win of the season after striking out eight batters in five innings.
Offensively for the Pioneers, Dakota Connors led the way with four hits and three RBIs, while Marcus Williams went 3–for–5 with two runs scored. Four Otters recorded two hits in the victory.
CAL STATE MONTEREY BAY 7, CAL STATE EAST BAY 6 -- BOX SCOREThe Otters took an early lead in this one plating a run in their first at–bats, and led 3–0 after three innings. However, due for a big inning, CSUEB pushed across six runs in the fifth inning, featuring a three–RBI double by DH Nick Perez, putting Cal State East Bay in the lead at 6–3. CSUMB closed the gap with a run in the fifth inning and had a chance to take the lead in the sixth with the bases loaded and two outs.
With a flair for the dramatic, the Otters quickly got runners on in the bottom of the seventh, putting the presure on CSUEB reliever Michael Frantz.
Josh Heinz (Santa Clarita, Calif. / West Ranch HS) got the Otters within one run with an RBI single and was quickly ran for by
Jake Riffice (Granite Bay HS) as he represented the winning run.
Ty Morris (Royal Oaks, Calif. / North Monterey County HS) drove in
Kevin Davidon (Yucaipa HS) to tie the game at six runs apiece.
After a strikeout gave CSUMB one out, brought up
Shawn Wheeler (Citrus Heights, Calif. / Bella Vista HS) with a chance to win the game. Wheeler did just that with a single through the left side and into left field on a 1–2 count, bringing home Riffice and inducing a dog pile in the middle of the field.
Christian Stubbs (Mission Viejo, Calif. / San Joan Hills HS) earned his first win of the season (1–1) after throwing two and two–thirds innings in relief. Five different Pioneers contributed a hit in the loss with Perez and Marcus Wise recording three and two RBIs, respectively.
Cal State Monterey Bay improved its record to 7–4, 3–0 CCAA and will wrap up the four game series against Cal State East Bay Sunday at 11 a.m.
