Otters Complete Series Sweep of Cal State East Bay

Otters start 4-0 in CCAA play after home sweep of Pioneers

SEASIDE, Calif. -- Sunday afternoon's finalé featured just four total runs, but behind Cody Gappa's (Corning, Calif. / Red Bluff HS) seven innings of one–run ball, the Cal State Monterey Bay Baseball team needed three runs to complete the series sweep of visiting Cal State East Bay, winning 3–1.

CSUEB pushed across their run in the top of third inning, tying the game at 1–1 in the early innings. The Pioneers threatened to take a 2–1 lead in the fifth inning after a leadoff triple by Rob Link, but a series of groundout–strikeout–groundout left Link stranded on third. The Otters used that momentum to push across their second run of the game in bottom half of the fifth inning to take a 2–1 lead. CSUMB spread out their run production, scoring once in the second, fifth, and eighth innings to take a 3–1 win.

Gappa earned his first win of the season (1-0) by throwing for seven innings, allowing three hits and one run. While Gappa walked four batters, he did counter with six strikeouts.
Myles Hager (Tarzana, Calif / Chaminade College Prep) led the Otter offense going 2–for–4 at the plate and was responsible for two of the three Otter runs as he recorded an RBI and a run scored. Rudy Navarro led the way for CSUEB with a two–hit, one–RBI day.

The Otters improve their record to 8–4, 4–0 CCAA and have won six consecutive games and seven of their last eight. Cal State Monterey Bay will hit the road for the first time this season next weekend, when they play a 4–game series at Cal State San Bernardino beginning on Friday, February 27. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
