SEASIDE, Calif. -- After earning a win in the opening game on Friday, the Otters looked to take a commanding lead in the series with a doubleheader sweep of Western Oregon on Saturday at the Otter Sports Complex. However, WOU had other ideas and proved that with a 7–6 win in game one of the twin bill. The Otters bounced back in the second game scoring four times on the way to a 4–2 win behind stellar pitching from
Ryan Boydstun (La Quinta HS), earning a doubleheader split.
WESTERN OREGON 7, CAL STATE MONTEREY BAY 6 -- BOX SCOREA scoreless game until the fifth inning when the Wolves blew it open putting five runs on the board, highlighted by a bases–clearing three–RBI double by Matt Taylor giving WOU a 5–0 lead. The Otters got on the board and made it a three run game when
Kevin Davidson (Yucaipa HS) hit a two–RBI double giving him two of his four RBIs in the game. Davidson earned his other two RBIs in the eighth inning when he went opposite field knocking a two–run shot over the right field line, putting the Otters within two at that point, 4–6.
CSUMB made it interesting in the bottom of the ninth as they tried to comeback from three run deficit. A
Matt Urakami (San Jose, Calif. / Branham HS) RBI single and RBI groundout by
Josh Heinz (Santa Clarita, Calif. / West Ranch HS) put the Otter within sight of a tie and possibly a walk–off hit and 6–7. A WOU pitching change to Shawn Domke would seal the deal for the Wolves as Domke induced a ground ball from Davidson ending the game and hopes of a comeback.
Jeff Owen (Clovis East HS) was faced with the loss moving to 0–1 on the season. Offensively for the Otters, Davidson recorded two hits and four RBIs. For the Wolves, Taylor led the way with three hits and three RBIs of his own.
CAL STATE MONTEREY BAY 4, WESTERN OREGON 2 -- BOX SCOREWhile the Otters got two more RBI off the bat of Davidson and scored a total of four runs in the game, it was Boydstun (1–0) who stole the show.
