SEASIDE, Calif. -- The Cal State Monterey Bay Baseball team earned its first series win of 2015, taking three games from Western Oregon University. It came down to the final inning of the series finalé for game four to be decided, but with the winning run 90 feet away,
Matt Urakami (San Jose, Calif. / Branham HS) took advantage of a passed ball and sprinted home to score the second run of the game for the Otters in a 2–1 victory on Sunday afternoon at the Otter Sports Complex.
CAL STATE MONTEREY BAY 2, WESTERN OREGON 1 -- BOX SCORECSUMB was the first to get on the board in this game when
Shawn Wheeler (Citrus Heights, Calif. / Bella Vista HS) put the ball in play, allowing
Ty Morris (Royal Oaks, Calif. / North Monterey County HS) to score from third. The Otters squandered many opportunities to score runs, leaving nine runners on base in the one-run victory.,
WOU got the run back in fifth inning when Brandon Oliver grounded out sending Garret Harpole home from third base. In the top of the ninth inning the Wolves threatened with a runner on second and one out.
Jacob Cox (Madera, Calif. / Liberty HS) came in to pitch as the Otters fourth pitcher of the day and, after a walk to Harpole, induced a double–play ball off the bat of Tim Rausch to end the inning.,
The bottom half of the ninth began with an infield single by Urakami. Wheeler then moved Urakami up via a sacrifice bunt, giving the Otters one out. A ground out by
Will Rosado (Clovis
East HS) moved Urakami to third bringing
Curtis Gomez (Watsonville, Calif. / St. Francis HS) to the plate. With a count of three balls and one strike, Gomez took an outside pitch for ball four that was mishandled by the WOU catcher, allowing Urakami to cross the plate and score the winning run for the Otters.
The win was handed to Cox (1–0) who got the final two outs of the top of the ninth inning. Offensively, Rosado led CSUMB with three singles going 3–for–5 on the day.
Kevin Davidson (Yucaipa HS) and
A.C. Nuñez (Corona, Calif. / Roosevelt HS) each chipped in with two hits apiece. The solid start from CSUMB's
Cody Gappa (Corning, Calif. / Red Bluff HS) became slightly overlooked in the walk–off win, as he pitched five strong innings, allowing one run while striking out three in his second appearance of the season
The Otters improve to 4–4 on the season and will begin CCAA competition next weekend. Cal State Monterey Bay will face Cal State East Bay in a 4–game series beginning Friday, February 20 in Seaside, Calif. at the Otter Sports Complex. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. on Friday.
